A good game I like while not strictly an RPG is Shattered Galaxy. It's a MMORTS which does have a lot of RPG elements. Free to play for as long as you want though you can also pay for it to get more features such.

Lineage 2 is graphics wise probably the best. It isn't actually free but getting onto private servers is relatively easy and nowadays at least c1 servers are very stable and have lots of players. Many sites offer direct download for the client too.

Ultima online I forget the name of the cracked server but it's supposed to be great too. It goes back to the build before it was ruined by it's current owners. You can download the client online too.

Rose is beta idd, those others, I don't know 
I just wanted to know what kind of free (at the moment) mmorpg's are played the most.
Guild Wars is not in the list because you have to buy the game.
Btw, I tried Guild Wars but I don't call it a mmorpg. Why not? When you leave the cities doing some quests you're on your own (or only with your party/guild members)! That's not what I call a mmorpg. It's more like an online 'single player game' where you can invite some people to join you.
The gfx, sound and setting are nice, even the gameplay, but I want to meet other people when doing some quests. But hey, everyone got his own opinion
Anarchy Online, it was great in the beginning, but I had some lag issues (players bouncing) and it became a bit boring after a while.
Knight Online is my fav, it's kept very simple (menu structure) and I didn't have lag issues. The gfx are ok, gameplay is fine.

AO Classic is completely free and Funcom claims it will remain free. You still need to pay for the expansion packs, and if you use them you need to pay a monthly fee. In the past Funcom said they might only keep the free version of the game going for a year, but it looks as if they've revised that.
Project Entropia has always been free... sort of. If you actually want to do something in the game besides run around in orange, you're going to have to drop some money into it. And the game is a ridiculous money hole. But technically, that's optional. I had fun for about a week just running around with nothing, looking for bugs. I scored some awesome screenshots of me on top of structures that were supposed to be impossible to get on. Heh. The game is specifically designed so that only people who pay will have any real fun, but I don't consider paying real money for virtual ammo to be fun, personally. It makes me sad that people are willing to do that.
Guild Wars is not an RPG any more than Diablo is. They are adventure games. There's quite a big difference.

Ok I've tried Kal, Rose, Mu, and Knights. And the only one that is crap is Mu, the resolution sucks and reading text is difficult. Not going to bother with project entropia thats just money sink. I think rune is old so should suck like Mu. Dont know what rubies of eventide is.
I should point out that rose, kal, and knights are pretty good. But then at least 2 of them are eventually going pay.
