Hi All,
hopefully an easy question. If I have a router which assigns the ip addresses to my network and I connect a 24 port switch to the router using one cable, will all devices connected to the switch have their own ip address from the router and when data is transferred between devices on the switch will the data only travel within the switch or will it travel back to the router as well?
In short, will having only one cable from the router to the switch affect anything on the switch in terms of bandwidth as long as all communication is restricted to devices on the switch?
Thanks for the reply, I expected as much but wanted to make sure before making any purchases. The internet will be fine as the single cables speed far exceeds the internet speed.
Sorry, I could have said the router is the dhcp server but kept it simple, not sure how stating the router assigns the ip address is being vague unless you want to get really picky but anyway..
They are dumb switches, my question was more for confirmation than anything else as I was fairly sure of the answer but I just wanted to make sure that any data would not need to pass though the router if all devices where connected to switch Since there would be only one cat6 cable going from the router to the switch.
It's all good as StrEagle has confirmed my question and I've now tested the setup.
