Hi guise,

i`m looking for an old game (around 15 years old) - afair it was mix of action with rpg elements, beat em up style or something simmilar (maybe something like crusade renegade/remorse or whatever it name was). Afair (again) it was full 2d with side view just like those arcade dungeons and dragons beat em ups. Theme of the game was the ascension of some evil tower (or maybe descending down lol). Graphics were pixelated, nothing amazing, definitely not on pair with DnD games. I remember that there was some knight walking throught the corridors with some mobs around.

Game could have a word "tower" in the title, but my memory really fails me on this one.

Any suggestions?

Pixelated gfx weren't a trend back then. Sounds weird. And side-scroller in 1999-2000? Even weirder.

Anything that comes to me with a tower in the name and a beat em up 2d is DnD Tower of Doom. But that's more than 20 years and you said that it's just like that, so you probably know this.

1999-2000 was the era of first (or even second) gen GFX cards and nothing was pixelated. pixelation came back as a trend 1-2 years ago.

I think it wasn't released 15 (1999-2000) years ago.. sounds like it is much older..

Waargh - nope
pax - as I wrote it was pc game, I doubt it was some console port.

as for the years - i`m guessing with 15 years, I remember it was mentioned as free addition to some magazine (?) so it might be little bit older than that.

I remember that its theme was the tower (of some evil sorcerer?) and ascending/descending the levels, it was 2d view simmilar to the beat em ups - you have some background and foreground planes, just like in those dnd arcade games

Have you tried searching here?
http://www.mobygames.com/search/quick?q=tower . I guess you have to search for DOS and windows games separately though

1999-2002 were "boom" of 3D graphics, every publisher and every dev wanted to make a game in 3D even if it looked retarded that way. Pixelated games on PC were super-rarity and it most likely was a port indeed.

how can I choose filters on that page? For example I want to choose both windows and dos as a platform but when I click windows the page shows only that platform with other options (years, theme etc) and I cant add another platform to the search filter

I looked a bit on Ag.ru but they don't have as good coverage on older games as they do on newer titles so I didn't find that much from 1998 - 1999 that could fit that criteria.

Ecstatica 1 and 2 was probably the closest but it's using 3D character models with Elipsoid (?) backgrounds instead of Polygons so it's probably not the correct game(s) however it is an arcade style beat-em-up with action/rpg elements.

The phrase you're looking for is '2D sprites', which is how most games were produced, until the advent of cards like 3DFX.

Looking for a specific game is like asking for straw of a certain shade of yellow in a haystack Very Happy

Well if people are going to talk about 'pixellated' graphics, then they might as well use the correct terms ffs, not like it's Art Nouveau...

This might be of help if you decide to use it to continue searching, on Ag.ru I was using the Isometric and Arcade tags when I browsed around for matching games. Smile

With Isometric and something like 90 - 95 hits per page at 14 pages that's well over a thousand titles although limiting the search to years between 1998 - 2002 limits it somewhat.

http://www.ag.ru/games/filter/g66/s3/p11

With the Arcade tag things get a bit more complicated as there's 101 pages so it's "over 9000" hits although once again just limiting it to a few years helps.

http://www.ag.ru/games/filter/g15/s3/p84

EDIT: It's a Russian website I think so navigation can be a bit problematic due to localization and it might not be entirely legit (Has NFO files and other stuff.) but I really like their massive collection of game screens and I believe they might also have artwork though it might be a members only feature. (A adblocker can also help.)

(Lately I've been sorting various categories by year and checking the last couple of pages since those hold all the canceled and on hold projects, interesting to see info on stuff I missed when I was younger and also to see all these interesting concepts that never made it, such as this example for the RPG category. - http://www.ag.ru/games/filter/g46/s3/p27 )

(And sometimes you find games that actually were released that should probably never have been. - http://www.ag.ru/games/ethnic-cleansing/screenshots )

EDIT: Home of the Underdogs also had a good list of older games, many of them with reviews and other info but I don't know if they are still around, MobyGames comes up quite often as well but I think it was already mentioned earlier in this topic. Smile

EDIT: Oh and as you said the artwork of games in the 80's and 90's were fantastic, hand painted covers on those larger box like cases and also fully packaged with content such as manuals more than 10 pages long and other stuff. Surprised
