KOEI TECMO America is thrilled to confirm today that Toukiden 2, the sequel to the popular demon-hunting RPG Toukiden, will release across in Spring 2017.
The Toukiden series tells the tale of humanity’s last stand for survival against demonic, soul-devouring Oni. As revealed in Toukiden: The Age of Demons, humanity was protected for centuries by a secret clan of warriors, the Slayers, trained to dispose of the supernatural threat before it could consume the world. An event known as the Awakening caused rifts to appear in space and time – resurfacing places that had long disappeared from the world and unleashing swarms of Oni that relentlessly hunted humans.
Taking Oni-hunting to a brand new level, Toukiden 2 introduces an open-world environment filled with strange life forms, empty ruins, unexplored caves and fearsome Oni.
Players will take on the mantle of a Slayer charged with the task of defending humanity’s last remaining villages from the supernatural threat of Oni. Taking all types of shapes and sizes, these demons creep out of dark rifts in space and time to prey on mankind. Warriors from the ancient and secret cast of the Slayers are the only ones equipped to stop them![
Set shortly after the events detailed in Toukiden: Kiwami, Toukiden 2 introduces an all-new, captivating narrative featuring a compelling cast of companions and more devious demons to defeat. Players will step into the shoes of a Slayer tasked with saving humankind by carrying out special quests to reduce the monstrous hordes and liberate Oni-infested areas. Toukiden 2 boasts a vast and extensive open world full of danger and wonder, and takes the player deep into enemy territory. Slayers and Oni will battle it out in the Otherworld, a tormented battleground divided into six distinct Ages. Revisit the redesigned Ages of Yore, Grace, Honor, War, Peace and Chaos, each distinctively representing an era of Japanese history, and discover more about the Oni threat and your character’s unique role in its resolution!

Toukiden 2 will launch for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PC via Steam on March 21 in North America and March 24 in Europe, Koei Tecmo announced.
The press release does not mention a digital-only release for any platform. Steam, of course, is digital-only within itself.
Pre-orders for Toukiden 2 include the “Tenko Costume” armor, allowing Slayers to dress up as their fluffy companions, and the “Sanada Masayuki,” “Sanada Noboyuki,” “Sarutobi Sasuke,” and “Chiku Rin In” Miitama to bolster the player’s skills and abilities. In North America, these are limited to Amazon, Best Buy, EB Canada, or GameStop. The European press release doesn’t mention any specific shops.
Pound for pound, Toukiden 2 is an impressive entry. The majority of the cast are legitimately interesting for one reason or another, complemented by Hidari’s wonderful artwork. It’s assisted by a wealth of content to delve into and a generous amount of equipment to procure. Yes, it may not always be meaningful, but fans will appreciate what the game presents.
While it may not go far enough to vastly improve on its previous entry, this series continues to offer plenty of appeal for someone like me who could not get into Monster Hunter due to how it skimps on the story. Bottom line, Toukiden 2 is a great option for those looking to get into this type of genre. It doesn't even feel as much of a chore this time to take down an Oni. And really, considering Monster Hunter hasn't been on consoles in a very long time (not counting the online-only game), it's certainly worth a look for that alone.

Toukiden 2 is a huge step up from its predecessor, and is a smart evolution of the gameplay that Monster Hunter fans have come to know. By opting for a more story-focused experience, it manages to forego feeling like a grind, and the open-world aspect allows players to really take in their surroundings. While there are still some shortcomings, such as a sometimes confusing map and lackluster multiplayer, this is an action game that is worth checking out, even for those that haven’t traditionally been fans of hunting games.

Toukiden 2 shows that an already impressive series can be made even better by taking chances on new systems. The story stays in scope of the premise throughout the game even after accepting multiple side-quests, there’s always clear knowledge of what to do next. Although the open world map may be intimidating to some, the game offers easy quick traveling options to seamlessly get players from one place to another. After playing the game for well over 30 hours, I feel like I can continue playing for another 100 and with that I happily say, “Bring it on!”

In short, Toukiden 2 is everything a sequel should be. Instead of lazily expanding on the original game, which would have been so easy to do, Omega Force actually went back to the drawing board, completely reinventing those parts that needed work. By streamlining much of the dull admin and encasing the game in a larger open world, Toukiden 2 manages to break free from the pack. As a result, it’s easily one of the subgenre’s best entries to date and one that, in some ways, is preferable to Monster Hunter.
Reading the Steam forums it seems there's no mouse support in the game, nothing unexpected for Koei I guess (And a couple others.) but still something to note.
Gamepad controls would probably be easier though, game is a bit like monster hunter from my understanding although no mouse support at all complicates things like camera control if it's really that bad.
