I mean I get that it redirects yourname.no-ip.com to your IP so you don't have to remember it or find out what it currently is, but how does it update the IP when it changes? Do you have to have some tool of theirs running in the background to do periodic checks?

Yes, they usually have a tool for automaticly updating it, atleast DynDns does.

That's one way.

The other way is to have your modem report them whenever your IP changes. But for that your modem has to support their service.

For example, my ADSL modem supports a few well known dynamic DNS services.
