"Subnautica is an open world, underwater exploration and adventure game currently under construction at Unknown Worlds, the independent developer behind Natural Selection 2."
Honestly i have no fucking clue what to do. It's obviously some minecraft derivation where you need to gather materials to do this and that, but i have no clue how it works. I chose exploration mode, but it turned into survival come night time 0.o
It looks pretty neat though. That's pretty the only positive thing i know right now.
It's a bit basic at the moment but you basically leave the drop pod (Which amazingly has a fully functional fabricator. ) and then you do short excursions down on the ocean floor for basic materials such as sand, various other parts and metal debris.
Back to the fabricator and reaching the pod your inventory should save (Of course the game doesn't seem to save progress at all in free mode at the moment.) this allows you to convert several basic materials to more advanced stuff and of course create items.
Items range from utility such as better flippers to improve underwater speed or a flashlight to combat gear (Well there's a knife at the moment.) and there's more fancy stuff as well such as small exploration vehicles.
(Can also build a floating structure and place it outside and then build said vehicles from there.)
Not much else to do but you can engage some hostile alien(?) fish creatures, can even pick up a few but I don't think it has a purpose at the moment as the DNA scanner and a few other tools you can see in the fabricator have a small explanation text on how they are not currently implemented.
You can also reach the main ship but radiation means it's not possible to do much before dying, at the moment at least.
Depth has a small impact as you can get crushed if you go to far and I don't think there's weather but the more hostile creatures do get a bit more active at night, plus you can't see much.
Basically like the early Minecraft alphas (And the myriad of clones that have now appeared.) so it's pretty bare-bones or basic at the moment but it could grow to become a nice little exploration / survival game, perhaps even have multiplayer of some variety but I have no idea what the developers have planned.
(And as I briefly mentioned there's a ton of "Minecraft clones" on the market now, including several just on Steam early-access.)
EDIT: Oh and there's a inventory limit and air has to be managed, air tanks can be crafted to extend underwater time by 30 seconds each but the more you have the more inventory space is taken up and I believe it also slows you down.
Not that many different environments at the moment and limited flora and fauna though there's a variety of aquatic life forms both traditional and more alien looking.
(Like a really derpy looking thing that gasses you if you get close to your standard shark like hazards.)
Yeah, I started to play this and enjoyed the gameplay and atmosphere so much that I decided I won't touch it again until they decide it's done. Game is too cool to get burnt out at this early.
The build that upgrades the game to Unity 5.2.1 in experimental should hit stable sometime later this month so that should change things a bit, has some pretty neat features and they even made a little poster for the update dubbed "H2.0"

Exactly the same for me. I love underwater game and this one is perfect. The sounds, ambience, submarines and all that! I LOVE it. But I dont want to get burnt in before full release, so I played a an early version (before the ship exploded and you could explore it) and I dont think i'll touch it again until it's fully released, or a lot more features complete!
i played it alot. Nice Graphics (not BF or Witcher or any WTF like tripleA BS... but effective) Great Soundtrack and ambient noises. Gets scary sometimes - and most importent NOT a shooter! Get along with an alien world... peacefully.
In experimental-mode you get constant updates - some are buggy, but at anytime you can send a report to the developers.
So I've just yarred the Beta.2559 version aaand... it crashes on startup
Any ideas? Should I look for a yarred v2558?
Just buy the game.
Unknown worlds deserves the money given how many hours most of us put into Natural Selection which was free, and for going out of their way and doing NS2 which was a crowdfunded game before crowdfunding was a thing. They sort of botched NS2 up early on by making their own game engine, but I give props for trying something new. Sort of a shame all the work on the Spark engine was for nothing given that they dumped it for Unity. I can understand why, but Spark had some great potential if it would have just had more money/development behind it. NS2 these days runs fairly well and is fun, but it's a shame it took them so long to get it working because the community for it is way smaller then the game deserves.
They didn't get a whole hell of a lot of funding for Subnautica so please give them cash if you want to see continued development. They dropped NS2 development for it.
I might, I just want to take a look first. I'm not really into those survival-crafting-sandbox games, but this one somehow drew my attention (maybe the fact that I'm a diver myself had something to do with it), so I'd like to make sure it won't be a TOTAL waste of time
Anyone following this game; has there been any talks of multiplayer?
I usually don't play the sandbox games alone at all.
Unfortunately, the dev has explicitly stated that multiplayer is not in the pipeline whatsoever. Maybe when they deem that the game is 'finished' they'll start working on it.

Well, it's an issue of manpower. They'd rather add more features to what they have, then once the game has 'enough' they'll divert what little manpower they have to add multiplayer.
