Do I really need to do this once a year? I don't feel like pulling half my PC out just to do this :/
It has been said it should be good practice to clean and re-apply paste once a year for optimal cooling and performance.
Truth or BS?

i usually take a look at my cpu temp when it was just aplyed. (~35). i have a scythe ninja.
when the difference go near 10 degree, i change the thermal paste.
until then i just blow the dust once per 1-2 months, and clean the dust filter.

I personally never do it.
I mean I only do it while assembling the PC parts together. And since my CPU cooler already came with a pre-applied thermal paste on, I don't want to even mess with it to begin with.

I personally clean the radiator from the dust once every few months. Bring my temps down quite a bit imo.

I do it about once a year, but that's because I disassemble the fan and cooling block for a more thorough cleaning. Most of the time it's not needed.

Once a year to clean all the fans and parts is really not that bad.

BS.
source: having 2500K at 4.5Ghz for almost 3 years and only using compressed air duster to clean fans etc. my temps now are the same as they were on the day i bought it.
i would consider thermal paste change maybe once every 5 years, but i never had cpu that long so for me it was never an issue.

with air filters in the intake fans, your inside (of the case) should never have any (noticeable) dust in it.
I've just 2 intakes in front of my tower (yeah, still haven't assembled my self made one rofl) and i don't have any dust inside (the case) , ever.

no need in a desktop pc to change the thermal paste every year. just do it when changing mb/cpu/cooler. just get rid of the dust inside the case every then and now
when it comes to laptops its different, i know many people who take theirs into bed etc and thats ofc not good. will suck the dust like shit, laptop gets hotter, paste dries out. and who gets to clean all the shit when the laptop is outside of warranty? correct... ^^

On my previous rig I used one application of Indigo Extreme. Never removed my waterblock from Summer 2012 until September 2014.
After 2.5 years, I took off my waterblock and this is what it looked like:
If you dont like maintaining paste, go with Indigo.

What is this nonsense now? You don't need to reapply thermal paste - it is in fact not advisable to do so.
Thermal paste does not get less effective gradually over time. Bad paste has an expiration date that's not sufficient, but even then it won't degrade gracefully. Once it goes bad, it goes bad. Any half-decent compound can easily do 10 years.
Moreover, a fresh application of thermal paste has to be broken in again and I'm willing to bet that 90% of people who reapply it every year don't bother breaking it in. Breaking it meaning running extremely high loads for a long period of time. A 10-minute burn test isn't enough. That'll activate the compound and allow it to start setting properly.
If you reapply your paste and your temperature drops by more than the margin of error (1-2 degrees), one of two things applies:
- the paste you're using is shit
- you're doing it wrong
And your temperature sure as shit can't drop at all right on the first boot after applying thermal paste. It should be higher than it was, because the compound isn't activated yet.
My old E8400 is still on the paste I originally put on it, so that must be 8 or 9 years ago now I think and its temperatures are just fine (ran into the guy I sold it to a while ago, he's still got it + my 5870 ). I have never replaced thermal paste for the sake of replacing it in my life. The only time where you really do need to replace it is when you take the cooler off; at that point the paste will lose a lot of its cohesion and you need to clean it off, apply a fresh batch.

before i upgraded this year my pc was only ever dust cleaned and fan blades wipe clean of build up on edges etc, but putting fresh thermal on I have never done. Not had a pc do anything stupid and removing parts when they are running fine just because it feels right to do a new application may only end up causing some bad luck lol.
Leave well alone, watch the temps and thats it.

well, i usually replace 24x24h servers paste every 2 years. if i let it for more, it becomes a concrete block, and i waste 30+ minutes trying to separate cooler from cpu. but i doubt home computers get to that stage without a cpu upgrade.
