Also, Microsoft releases free Visual Studio Community edition:

http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-has-a-new-free-version-of-visual-studio-now-available-for-download

Cannot be used for development of enterprise applications, but still not as trimmed down as Express Edition

Quote:
This edition includes all the features needed to create non-enterprise applications across desktop, devices, cloud, web and services, including coding productivity features, cross-platform mobile development tools for Windows, iOS and Android, and full extensibility with access to thousands of extensions.

Microsoft doesn't have to "give up" and they have no problems "staying in the game". So not sure what you're talking about.

Any multiplatform c# or other 'managed' application has to utilize mono over .net.
Things like the Unity3D engine, among others.
Doesn't mean .net is struggling in any way, but now they're free to invade that multiplatform space more completely.

Agreed, it's just that your "defeatist" attitude was misleading.
