Also, Microsoft releases free Visual Studio Community edition:

Cannot be used for development of enterprise applications, but still not as trimmed down as Express Edition

you can already run most .net apps through mono
i guess they thought they might as well give up to stay in the game

Microsoft doesn't have to "give up" and they have no problems "staying in the game". So not sure what you're talking about.

Any multiplatform c# or other 'managed' application has to utilize mono over .net.
Things like the Unity3D engine, among others.
Doesn't mean .net is struggling in any way, but now they're free to invade that multiplatform space more completely.
