Okay so I'm a bit stumped on this one.

Got a i5 3750k 8gb ddr3 and a gtx 670. Has worked perfectly without a hitch on Windows 8.1 up until the last month when its started doing something odd. I'm going to do some memtests to check RAM but I'm leaning towards a possibly dying vid card, though the problem is weird to say the least.

basically power up the pc, jump into a game without it be dayz, sims arma 2 (no jokes about game choice please) and the game runs perfect...

Can play for 2-4 hours without any problems at all, UNTIL i alt tab out. When I alt tab out and look at a browser window for reference on a game or something or youtube or anything in general I will notice that a small part of the screen, usually where an image is would be all garbled.. I scroll up and down and that section of the screen remains garbled... Alt tab back into game and carry on playing.

Sometimes the game text will start to garble up on me. A restart fixes the issue.

Sometimes it happens straight away, ie enter a game with zero probs alt tab out and it starts doing it, sometimes it wont at all.

Running latest 8.1 latest gtx drivers (tried updating to latest to see if problem was cured) but keeps happening.

Sometimes the browser will go all white on me while the game is running in background and I will get driver stopped responding errors.

Running MSI afterburner which shows the gpu temp as being around 60c so nothing too crazy, gpu usually jumps up and down in games like dayz anyway due to bad optimisation so its usually around 50-70%

Weird thing is that if I dont alt tab at all while playing, I can play without any issues at all, fps is smooth, card doesnt go full fan speed, cpu remains cool, nothing. Only happens when alt tabbing.

Fairly sure its something to do with clock speeds of card when tabbing in and out of game that causes it which makes me think about the video mem being bad? never had BAD artifacts where i cant see the game, usually just sections of the game window where text is displayed...
Odd.

Any ideas on what to check? I cleared out the dust from video card a few months back (worked fine immediately afterwards, if anything temps dropped 5-10c) and am wondering if a heatsink on vid mem isnt touching properly?

Ideas^

Did you try completely cleaning drivers and installing again?

Not done a FULL clean of nvidia drivers nope. I can uninstall all of them, then which program to do a full nuke of remaining nvidia drivers do I need to use.

If the card was dying, wouldn't in theory I be getting these artefacts appearing randomly when playing the game? Why only when alt tabbing?

Sounds more like a software problem. If you want to be sure you'll have to reinstall a fresh windows and install a small game where you can reproduce this problem :/

sometimes simple clean windows reinstall isn't enough, and you'll need to put GPU into another computer to be 100% sure what is at fault.

Did a full driver uninstall and driver clean in safe mode before reinstalling nvidia drivers using default settings and nothing happened in the 30 mins I tried.

Probably just luck as it doesnt happen EVERY time. Will let you goes know if it continues. Thanks anyway for your help lads, hope the card isnt dying.

Like rgb said, if you want to be 110% sure, put in another system and test there.
