Unsurprisingly, I couldn't find a thread for this game here. IMO this might be one of the most underrated games ever and probably flew under most peoples radar.

Story

Adam Randall ventures to a haunted house in order to investigate the mysterious circumstances around his father's death. As he enters, however, the doors locks behind him and he is forced to journey throughout the entire house while looking for answers as well as means of escaping it. Along the way he meets up with the psychic woman Rebecca Trevisard who provides Adam with guidance as they work together in trying to escape. Adam soon discovers the house contains portals to several different universes, and that he is the Chosen One who must prevent the final apocalypic battle between the forces of good and evil.

The game has over 40 hours of content and includes many different universes to travel, and has a plot which involves multiple sides fighting for their own causes. The beginning gives the idea of Adam being against demonic forces, but later on player finds himself caught in much deeper plot between different forces, where demons play only one role.

Gameplay

The player explores locations and battles demons from a first-person perspective. A floating cursor is used to interact with the environment and pick up items. The game features many inventory-based puzzles.

The story of Realms of the Haunting is told through full-motion video cutscenes, which utilize live-action actors.

While the 40 hours is probably a bit too much, this game isn't short by any means. It took me 15 hours for my first playthrough.

The above does not really make clear why this game is so special though. If you are interested (and don't mind minor spoilers), this article is quite good:

This game has a really great atmosphere, I can recommend it to anybody who likes horror games. It has a Lovecraft feel to it and reminded me a lot of the Chutulhu games. It has a lot of FMV with real actors. The acting is obviously cheesy, but it only adds to the atmosphere.

The game has only one flaw IMO, and that is the controls. Basically they chose the worst possible solution for this game. It does not hold the game back from being fun, but I never really felt satisfied. You can customize it to a certain extend with Dosbox, but that does not remedy the fact that there is no strafing.

The game is available on Steam and GOG, and I believe currently even on sale.

if I think more about it, they wanted to mix Tex FMV Adventure with a fixed Killing Time ... but they failed

This game does have some flaws, but awful shooter? While there are quite a number of fights later on, I found the game not to focus on combat too much. They even give you recharging weapons quite early, which even removes any ammo problems later on.

Fighting is not very good, but that is mainly because of the controls.

They still nailed the atmosphere, and later on the environments are quite interesting (even if technologically quite simplistic).
