My bro is building a gaming pc.

Correction: im building it for him. he has a big enough budget, but would like to save where he can.

He wants:

a pc that can play every game coming out in the next year or so on 1080p high - max (obviously barring any crazy 6gb memory texture pack ). he wont be going past 1080p too soon.

now i thought, future proof wise, just go with the r9 290x. but i just want to know, is that overkill for what we are aiming for? can i save £100-200 by getting something less beefy, and still allow the rig to keep up on high-max for at least a couple of years.

oh and the baseline he has quoted me for this rig, is, 60fps, 1080p on max setting for the witcher the wild hunt, he is pretty much buying the pc for that game.

Any GTX970. Really cheap, very quiet, low power draw and supremely powerful, beating the 290x at lower cost.

Four 970s then Razz Seriously though, trying to build a computer around a game series infamous for being punishingly tough on systems, many months before it's even out? That's a tall order.

The GPU to run that game maxed out doesn't exist yet Laughing

But you're better off with a 970, unless the 290X has dropped in price where you live. Cheaper, similar speed.

Aye, even with the current price drop for the 290 I'd still go with a 970 and if money wasn't a problem 980. But I'd already be happy with a 970 tbh.

If it's just for the witcher he might want to wait till it's released anyway. You never know who dropped their prices by then.

cool, thanks guys.

haven't been involved in the high end graphics scene for 5 years Smile

and yeah i imagine witcher on mx will be a tall order, but maybe just nice and high will do the job Smile

ill ask if he wants to wait as well, but i think he is also very excited for dragon age. plus i want to see nba 2k15 on max settings Wink

if so, ill go with the 970 for sure, rather nvidia anyway.

Morph has a point though, so it's worth bearing in mind; if your brother wants future proof and isn't afraid to spend a little more, the 980 is a worthy candidate. At stock it's much more powerful than even the overclocked 970.. which itself can be clocked higher.

"Future proofing" is a lie though. If you save the $200 price difference, and buy a new card in two years for $300, you will get a 30-40% performance increase from that, compared to the 10% more the 980 gives you now. Next to that you get support for newer dx versions and cuda and stuff more frequently.

Been buying upper middle-class components for years now, i live way better that way.

A value word in buying goods for me here in uk does not mean top of the line released items its means something lower budget but capable.

goto love the replies Very Happy but I guess he don't give a shit or its not what he meant as his reply was positive lol ( value for money I guess )

Around here you see VALUE slapped on all sorts of low item made goods, to me I'd of answered a zotac 6750 or something Laughing

The 970 is £260 and offers better performance than most anything else on the market, above and below, it's hardly like we're recommending Asus MARS II or Titan Z ffs, Moose Razz

Performance for what you have to pay is my definition on value.
Most bang for the buck how those mericans say it and... 970 tops the charts on that. Plus it's cheaper than the one he wanted to go for anyway. Smile

Hah,

Sorry I missed out a word in the title, but at least the body of my message explained it. Wink

I meant best value high-end GPU.

And thanks for all the comments. I think 970 is the best bet, will go stock (or base EVGA) and OC.

Don't go for the EVGA, far better options out there.

ah okay, this is where im not so in the know i guess.

so who are the best to go with in terms of brand for OC'ing, and temperature reliability then?

for the consideration that i plan to keep the price down and not pay an extra £50 for an OC i can do in 30 minutes.
