I recently bought a GeForce GTX 780 which works just fine with a single monitor, but when I add a second monitor my machine takes a considerable performance hit both in and out of games. I experience lag/choppyness just moving windows around my desktop, lag scrolling down webpages, lag even when creating a new tab in Chrome in the animation as the new tab appears, watching YouTube etc. Performance hit when doing anything basically.

It is a i5-3570 running @3.40Ghz with 16GB ram /64-bit W7 OS.

Reinstalled Windows with a new SSD recently.

Got the latest Nvidia driver which is the 344.11 as I'm typing this.

I've never had a machine react this way to adding a second monitor so I've changed the cables, ports, tried to add a TV instead. It doesn't seem to be draining actual CPU usage, it just lags down everything in some other way.

My main monitor is hooked up using DVI.
My secondary monitor is using HDMI through a DVI adaptor as I only have one DVI port and one HDMI on my card.
When I tried the TV instead of the secondary monitor I used HDMI, a different cable than the one used with my secondary monitor's adaptor just to be sure it wasn't the cable. I've also swapped it around, using HDMI for my main monitor and DVI without the adaptor for my second monitor. To no effect.

People have fixed extension issues trying to match monitor refresh rates (my main monitor can select between 59/60), but I don't think that's my problem seeing as it had the exact same response to the TV (30) as I did for my secondary monitor (60) and I did try to force my 59 to run a rate at 60 but it didn't improve things for me.

I've read that it is possible to make it better by disabling aero, disabling visual effects like transparency and so on, but seriously is that really the only way? This is the best graphics card I've had so I naturally assumed it would be able to handle two monitors with ease. My plan was to game on one and have forums/etc on the other, and I've gathered that should absolutely be possible and I've done it with lesser cards as well. I've noticed only few other threads/petitions around the web for similar issues with this type of graphics card, so I think it is a rare thing.

This is happening when I'm extending the desktop, when I'm cloning it doesn't have a similar negative impact.

I've tried enabling extension mode through Windows Control Panel, and through Nvidia Control Panel. It doesn't seem to make any difference for me where it is enabled from.

If I turn off the extension mode, the computer is back to normal. Anyone been in a similar situation? Do I have to return the card?

I cant comment on what to do, but I also own a 780 (asus one, since i got 2 DVI's) and it is completely fine with dual setup (both cloning and extending and both are different 3440x1440 1920x1080).

A stupid suggestion, but have u looked at the voltages when running a dual setup?

I had to turn off Aero and Shadowplay to get something close to a smooth experience; not acceptable; I'm sending this baby back.
