So my desktop has been freezing for a few months now every time I play a game. I tolerated it in the beginning but it's unbearable now. I need to hold down the power button and restart to get back into windows.

Watch dogs, sniper elite 3 and other games all have the same issue. It only happens in games. In the end I reinstalled windows 7 but the problem is still there. I'm almost confident now that my GPU is defective (Asus GTX 660).

I have used Heaven Benchmark on extreme settings and it too freezes but only in full screen mode.

I watched temps and load using MSI Afterburner. Temps never go above 61C with 99% constant load. When a game freezes there is no flickering or green textures. Just instant freeze. The fact that it only freezes in games made me focus on the GPU.

Posting here is the last thing I will do. Otherwise I will go buy a new card or build a new rig Very Happy

Have you tried closing programs one by one to see if it is something interfering with games? Especially MSI Afterburner, I found that it was making games run at just a few frames per second recently, like Titanfall and PvZ.

Be sure that possible software sources are not the reason (try with disabled antivir and firewall f.e.). BTW the freezing can also be an indicator for a dying power supply/not enough power supply or even stupid/broken USB periphery...

This is the first time I used MSI Afterburner, used ASUS's own variant before and had the same problem. So I highly doubt it's afterburner.

I used many different drivers and now it's on a clean install. I will try earlier drivers. Was also thinking to check the RAM but if then it would freeze even outside games right?

I will try disabling antivirus. I am using the same before I did a clean install so maybe it's the issue. The PSU is also worth checking, I will google to find a tool.

Using same HDD as before so it could definitely be an issue. I will try to install the game to an SSD and play from there.

Thank you all for the suggestions! Keep em coming

Isn't that how it's always is when it comes to problems Laughing

"Could be your RAM. Actually, when I think about it, it could be your PSU failing too. Could also be...."

I personally bet on his RAM as the culprit though Smile
