A thriller set two hundred years in the future, The Expanse follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.
This hour-long, ten episode series is based on the popular New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as The Expanse, written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). Abraham and Franck will be show producers.
Thomas Jane (Hung, The Punisher) will played the lead character of Detective Miller, a native of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Detective Miller works for a corporate security force that operates as the law in the asteroid belt. Ragged and in search of something he can't identify, Miller finds a new sense of purpose when he's put in charge of the investigation of a missing heiress.
Shoreh Aghdashloo (The House of Sand and Fog, 24, House of Saddam) will portray Chrisjen Avasarala, a smart and passionate member of a political family legacy who has risen high in the ranks of Earth's governing body.
Steven Strait (Magic City, City Island, 10,000 B.C.) will play Holden, an officer on the ice-carrying freighter, the Canterbury. Holden is a natural leader who's not sure he wants responsibility, but will soon have no choice when he is drawn into a dangerous plot.
Looks cheap like every other show they have greenlit since SG:Universe. When will they put serious money into a show with half decent writers and casting. It's working for every other major network, even the History channel is kicking ass with Vikings. Someone down there needs to cancel every new show they've tried in the last decade, put all that money into one well budgeted show, pay for decent writers or adapt a Phillip K Dick novel to tv series. Fill the rest of airtime with star trek, x-files, firefly re-runs as filler = mission accomplished success.
Don't people that work for this network look at HBO, AMC, Stars, Showtime then look at Helix, Defiance and Warehouse 13 and see a problem?

Watched it, evokes BSG, only done very amateurishly. 4/10 will probably not watch more.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
Something something Man has inhabited the solar system but something something those that live on Earth, those on Mars and those on the Belt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_belt are in conflict (a la BSG and the 12 planets).
This is literally all they have explained in the first episode.

Hm.. Ep 2, 3, 4 (and I actually can't find ep2..) must be leaked? They haven't aired yet.
I was well aware of the favorable reviews of ep1 when I watched it but I can't agree with them I'm afraid.

edit so ep2 will air tonight, so once that is released one can move on to the already leaked ep3 and 4.

I read the first two books. First one is ... around a 5.5/10, maybe. Second more like 4.5/10. Interesting concepts here and there, sometimes. But it's not good, if you are a more mature Sci-Fi fan. This series is a Soap Opera at best. So obviously the show can't actually be that good.
I've only watched the first episode some days ago, and apart from the good-ish production values (for Syfy's standards) and some interesting shots, there was nothing that grabbed my attention or even remotely intrigued me. I just found it generic and flat, but I'm willing to give the show a chance once we have all the episodes. Still, expectations are as low as you can get
@Consolitis: haha yeah, I read 'em too and thought, am I even watching the same thing?

Yeah, very favorable reviews. People just want to watch some space operas, and are projecting.
Like I said, even the books are a very, very far cry from what one would call good science fiction. This is just pulp space-opera. The first season will have a little noir in it, if they go by the books (Miller storyline), but aside from that, I just don't get the hype.
And I didn't even read the third book. I could say I enjoyed the first somewhat, so I read the second, but I will not read more. Why did I read them to begin with? Because I like reading, and have read basically every important book in the sci-fi domain, and was out looking for some more stuff to read.
Whats wrong with you guys I thought the pilot was at least good-ish.
But it was way too short and ended before the universe was even properly set up
Going to need to watch more than 3 or 4 episodes until I can say if the show is recommendable or not
I liked the first episode quite a bit; it evoked a sense of sci-fi scale which shows like Dark Matter, Killjoys and even Defiance have failed to provide (though in all fairness they probably weren't aiming for it either). That said, have yet to see the subsequent episodes, so it could go either way, though am hoping this one turns out well.
EDIT: OK, so finished all four episodes and I am liking it so far. Budget seems fairly decent and so effects arent too shabby, with space battles in the last episode. The story gets some cohesion after the first couple of episodes, and the characters more fleshed out. Will continue to watch this as each episode keeps me interested as to what will happen next, but then I also watched all the seasons of Under the Dome so what do I know?

Production values are high on this one. Checked out ep 2 as well.
They completely messed up the character motivations imho. Holden in the books is an idealist (in the first book), and he was XO before the book began. And he never had his authority challenged. He was a typical good guy, doing things becuase he believed in them. The show completely misses this point.
They also fucked up Naomi, made her the "stronk womyn". There was no need for that. In the book she is rational, stern as a rock and intelligent as fuck. But never the stereotypical stronk womyn. They made her the stronk womyn for reasons unknown.
Just started this today, can it be finally a good show from SyFy? I mean I watched all their crap in the last couple of years including Dark Matter, Killjoys, Defiance and 12 monkeys but that's just because there's nothing better sci-fi. Dark Matter was the only interesting one but had such terrible production values.
This on the other hand seems pretty decent and could evolve into something really good. It has fairly high production values, varied cast, greater scope, well defined and interesting world. I see a lot of potential in this one and have enjoyed the first few episodes.
