I absolutely love the 598!
My fiancee got them as a replacement for crappy JBL's that broke down after 2 days. The sound they produce is great. So I sometimes steal them when she's not around.
You'll be quite enjoying them, I'm sure of that.

God, everyone I know, knows someone who has them and says nothing but amazing shit. I can't fucking wait to get them. I've never had open back headphones before but I've heard they really open up the sound stage.

I would love 598 only if it had skin material memory foam pads. Plush cushions are too itchy for me

On a sidenote to make SkypeZ hate me, I got myself a pair of RS 180s too a while ago (because I cba dragging the 598's between rooms and a cable sucks in the bedroom anyway) and I'm actually quite pleased with their quality for what they cost and the fact that they're wireless.
They're not quite as good as a pair of 598's, but they're pretty good. For music they lack a bit of clarity, but for films I'm content with them. Still better than any gaming headset at least, some of which go for twice the money.

I picked up a steinberg CI2 and audio-technica ATH-M50's a while back and LOVE them.
Never had open back headphones, was debating on if I wanted closed studio headphones or not, but the sound out of them is amazing I think.
And enjoy the Topping! Ive heard great things about it for deep and detail of the sound it produces on good headphones. (not sure on the actual speaker amp part. I know one guy with one and he just uses it for headphones)

You would need an amp to properly drive headphones, mainly higher end ones, because they have a higher input impedance. Without an amp they will not sound quite like they should, with limited range and too "bassy" (because not all frequencies will be properly reproduced). Besides that, amps like that are usually not just amps, but they also have DACs in them, which basically makes it work like a dedicated soundcard improving the sound quality.
... or something like that.

Well, technically the HD598s, just as 558s and their predecessors, don't really need a dedicated AMP, since they have a typical impedance for headphones of 50 Ohm (if I am not mistaken) and these days even the onboard Realtek solutions have amps in them good enough to drive headphones like that (you need to label the output specifically as heaphones instead of speakers though).
The benefit for those will be mostly from better DACs and hardware in general, so if you have a decent sound card, it's debatable how much getting an AMP will really give you.
EDIT: With that said, many people seem to claim that those benefit greatly from an AMP because their impedance is not quite 50Ohm for the entire frequency range.
On my part, I can only say that while on HD600s (which have an impedance of 300 Ohm) there is a definite boost in detail, clarity and punchier bass with setting the gain higher on my STX, I did not see such a dramatic effect on my 555s, other than them being louder
Either way, I suppose a decent AMP is a good thing to invest in to complement a nice set of headphones

I can't tell you that personally yet, maybe the rest here can but as soon as I get to test them out I'll let you know

Exactly this. Also with using this amp I don't have to dick around with driver support on any system. Just plug and listen to your shit.

lol no you wouldn't. You'd ask us about our opinion on what you should get then you would go off into a tangent about it being 10 dollars out of your range, not having usb connection on it and doesn't offer the new 12.3 virtual surround sound and you'd end up just getting something from Razer that cost 20 dollars less because you couldn't wait 2 weeks to save your money.

Sennheiser's headphones are not usually built with gaming (or watching movies) in mind. They are first and foremost designed for listening to music (home use) - warm bass, natural instruments, a bit darkish tone.
What is amazing about Sennheiser (or what I like the most) is that they try to compensate for shit sound quality as much as possible; therefore even YouTube music sounds acceptable most of the time. (In contrary to, e.g., AKG Q701 which do the exact opposite - shit is emphasized to sound horribly bad, greatness is emphasized to be truly great.)
Personally, for gaming I would recommend something with studio characteristics - neutral, cold, bright, and analytical - to squeeze as much sound detail (footsteps, bullets, etc.) as possible. Cold, accurate bass should also be better for reproducing explosions.
However... open construction can (and will) produce wider soundstage* / soundfield which may increase immersion... and simply sounds pretty fucking cool. So battlefield in... well... Battlefield MP matches may sound bigger, wider, more spectacular.
*If you don't believe me, just cover such headphones tightly with your palms. The difference can be staggering at times.

Is that correct and if yes, then why still choose the TOPPING VX1? |
24 bit doesn't automatically mean better quality. IF you got some time read this
http://www.head-fi.org/t/415361/24bit-vs-16bit-the-myth-exploded
To your point though, amazon says it's 24-bit but that chip you mentioned states it's 16 so I'm asking about it elsewhere. I think Amazon made a boobo

Keep stinking creative headphones away from Sennheiser especially from the 598's!

You guys need to check out Superlux headphones, they have insane sound quality for the price (we are talking now on very low price, like 30 euro price range). They are basically High End headphones with lesser build quality (most of the models can be modded with AKG/Beyerdynamic velour pads for maximum comfort, about 50€ total with the mods). Currently using HD330 model, absolutely insane for the price (they are basically DT770 pro "clones").
