My rig has a SSD where windows is installed and another 1TB where all my games are installed. Because of a strange problem that made windows freeze I decided to reinstall windows 7.

I formatted the windows partition and everything went fine. My second HDD with all the games was untouched. Now whenever I launch any game I get:

The program can't start because msvcr110.dll is missing from your computer.

I googled around and everything points to some Microsoft redis is missing. I installed almost every single one I could find (2008, 2010, 2012). Still same problem.

Any suggestions? Maybe reinstalling windows is expected to break my games' installations?

Thanks

Most of the contemporary PC games have '_CommonRedist' subfolder within the installation folder.

Inside there, there should be another 'vcredist' subfolder. Run and install all the 'vcredist_x64.exe' or 'vcredist_x86.exe' files from there and you should be fine.

-------------

Additionally, you can copy&paste 'msvcr110.dll'

from "C:\Windows\SysWOW64" if your game has 32-bit executable

or

from "C:\Windows\System32" if your game has 64-bit executable (the very latest games with high RAM requirements, e.g., Watch_Dogs, Dead Rising 3, etc...)

to the same folder where game exe file resides. (root installation folder, bin, system, or whatever...)

umm.. game installs do install a lot of stuff in the system, user profile files and especially in the registry
i would expect very few application to work directly like this
only way to fix them properly is to reinstall them
rename old folder, install to the old path, remove or rename files you just installed, rename old folder back

some newer steam games might not have to do as much setup and might work right off the bat
milage may vary

I concur with the above people.
Very few games I found work with a new windows install/copied to a new computer.
Only ones I found was mostly MMO's.

They write registry keys, install things to windows sys32 and wow64, etc. Do checks to make sure that the right .net/redist/directx/etc files are there..and so on.

Usually its easier to just reinstall the non-working ones (well faster) than trying to find all the things its missing.

Thanks for the reply guys. I will just redownload whatever game. It's faster anyway than trying to fix it.

if you don't have a fast net connection you can leave old steam games in the common folder and steam will only download missing files

I have an mklink to SteamApps on another drive. I've found it's better to keep everything in there instead of just the Common folder.

If you have any problems with a game just verify integrity.

you don't need to hack a link anymore
when clicking install for a game, you can set secondary steam library locations on other drives
i have arma and other resource heavy games on an ssd and "normal" games on a hdd
