All of a sudden it's stopped showing the full URL in the address bar. There is a grey box to the left which lists the domain. Clicking on this shows the full URL until I do something, and then it returns to the domain box.

To the right of the grey box with the domain in it, is "Search Google or Type URL"

WTF IS GOING ON?

Well I found the issue, or at least, a fix.

I went to chrome://flags

and then set:

Enable origin chip in Omnibox Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS
Moves the URL out of the Omnibox and shows the hostname in the origin chip in the Omnibox. #origin-chip-in-omnibox

To disabled.

This fixed it, but wtf?!

It's more secure this way, prevents phishing. You see exactly the site you are visiting, and if you need the address, you can always show it. What is the problem?

I like to copy/paste quickly - I do it a lot.

I also like to change the URL manually quite a bit too.

Firefox has the main domain in black and the rest is in grey, so the user can identify the actual domain name. (A non-retarded user)

Seriously, I am no defender of Google, but cmon. This is good for most people. Most people are prone to phishing. Don't like if? You can turn it off. What more could you want?

You can turn it off NOW, but like every other forced Scroogle change, that won't be the case for long. How are you enjoying those non-store Extensions? Oh.. sorry, you need to run the Dev Build for that because This is Good For People®

(I'm not facepalming at you, but at Google for constantly fucking with things that need no fucking with)

There are chrome flags there for stuff they have added ages ago. They don't have a history of removing support.
