Hmm it's not that I cannot afford to spend £100, it's more that I cannot justify it right now. I have a Xbox 360 and it seems wasteful not to make use of it while it works. Sad

So I'm planing to get an external HDD for my JTAG x360 next week but I'm unsure as to what specs are better suited for this.

Should I look for an external powered or internal (via USB)?

Since I'm getting one to play games of it, anything I should look for (HDD Brand/RPMs/buffer)?

I found this to be pretty cheap and decent (a friend has it and so good so far): Verbatim Store n Go 500GB. It has 8MB buffer, 5600 RPM but it's powerd through USB, witch seems like a bad idea in this case...?

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with running an external HDD powered by the 360 itself. I've been running one on my JTAG since 2009 and it hasn't failed me yet *touch wood* and you don't need another power socket to accomodate it Smile

I've got my console running a 'Iomega Select 500GB Portable' which i think is not made anymore lol
But with space on tha running out, i've recently bought a 'Western Digital Elements SE Portable 1tb' which i'll be transfering everything to.

Make sure you format the drive to FAT32 and also USB 2.0 or 3.0 doesn't matter as the 360 is 2.0 based.

All right than, thanks guys!
I'll grab that one then, especially since my friend hasn't had any issues with it and I've already looked into that one.

Yeah, I know there's a limit on speeds for USB sticks so the same should apply for external HDD.

Ok so I have a question and I think this is the best thread for it!! If I flashed my Sammy drive about 700000 years ago and lost the drive key - do I have any options? Or do I need to buy expensive hard ware? Smile

Oh and I guess another question is, if I want to upgrade to the latest firmware (I cannot even play gears3 it's so old - ms25), do I need the original key?

So I bought the halo reach special edition xbox from one of my friends for $100 (not a bad deal I think, since it is Special Edition).

I've been using my old xbox elite 120GB, and holy shit the difference is huge to me, this thing is quiet as fuck. Might just be me, but the dashboard seems quicker to me as well. I don't really expect to get better performance in games, but who knows....

Anyways, now that I have a spare xbox, time to mod grinhurt

I've been thinking of getting a XBOX 360 lately, but since I have no real knowledge about running backups on this specific console, I though of asking: can we do it on the newer ones? Like those Slim models that are bundled with Halo 4? Or would I need to buy it first, to see if it's doable?

You'll most likely get a Slim console with a 1175 drive ( DG-16D5S) which currently isn't flashable, but it's firmware is in the testing stage with no ETA on it's release.

No, not any more. To burn LT3.0 capable games you need a BurnerMAX capable burner. Some drives are better than others, like the original iHas x24b (where x is 1, 2 or 5) burners that can have BurnerMAX firmware flashed to them, but there are some that support the temporary BurnerMAX "payload" tool.

List of compatible drives for permanent FW flashing or cross-flashing

List of drives compatible with the temporary Payload tool

I couldn't find any B-model iHas drives at a reasonable price, so I bought an ASUS DRW-24B3ST instead. This is compatible with iHas firmwares so I cross-flashed to iHas 524 and it works perfectly. I've got a friend (lfc4eva) with a "supposedly" compatible BurnerMAX drive but nothing he did would produce functional burns, so your mileage may vary if you don't go for a permanent FW flashable drive.

~edit~

Oh, wait, unless you meant DVD-RW as in.. the rewritable media?

You can burn discs with IMGBurner and DVD9s. Grab the ISO, open it with IMGBr, burn at 2-2.4x.

The best way is FTP. You can do that with internal or external HDD. If you have an external you can easily plug that to you PC and just copy the games there, and plug it back to the x360 (you will need FSD on the x360 for this).

If you want to FTP to the internal HDD just hook you x360 to the router, then you'll need x360 Content Manager (or other ftp programs) on your PC and FSD/dashlaunch/xexmenu on your x360. It should still have that since it was RGHed, unless the old user removed it.

After that you'll need either GOD games or JTAG rips. Or you can get the ISO and use ISO2GOD to get the GOD packs. Or if you already have burned discs you can either play those from the disc or, install those and use NXE2GOD to convert them.

With XBLA/DLC you don't have to do anything, just open them in x360CM, unlock them and and FTP them to the console. I recommend x360CM for stuff you want to transfer to the internal HDD as it will make the correct folder path automatically.

Check the RGH and Glitch threads.

Yeah, but if the speeds are shitty it will run shitty.

HDD are best, internal HDD are the best as that's a SATA connector.
