Horrordee wrote: | OK I have tried watching S1 a few times now. Both times I couldn't get through the first episode. I am not sure why; I like sci-fi and find the concept generally interesting. I guess the fear is the show is entirely focused on relationships and not really the science fiction part...
There are lots of shows I needed to watch 3-4 of before really getting into; Kin and Top Boy both went from snore fest to some of the best TV i've ever seen; will this too? Or is the first episode pretty representative of what is to come? |
It's more a sci-fi mystery. I recommend giving the 2nd episode also a try as it sets more things in motion. If you don't like that either then the show is probably not for you.

I got 1/2 way through season one, and got up to piss, and just didn't bother with anymore.
I like the premises and the vibe. But it's too...slow? Like the setup the concept, then just linger stalling on progressing it, exchanging tension for lingering on and on.
Im sure its a great show, just not my style/speed. It just feels like an interesting premise, then hours and hours of filler really 'driving home' that premise with sprinkles of actual interesting new bits tossed in too far apart.
And this really made me go "Aight, Im out of here"
Spoiler: | The thing of his boss being his neighbor really set the 'of course she is' to me. When me and wife started it and first saw her, I said "I hope they don't make her some kind of friend of his outie because he'd have no idea. She's TOO stern not to be a plot twist" Then YEP, it's that. made it feel too "highschooler writing a plot twist in their first try at a novel" to me |

A bit on the fence about the last episode. The innies being outside on some camping trip kind of.. jumped the shark a bit?
I thought it was more or less established that innies were not allowed to sleep (or dozing off), as their outtie memories could influence their dreams?
The ending was great though, Turturro is brilliant in this.
Spoiler: | I really hope Irv's not gone forever, he's the best character from the 4. But it felt definite |
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.

It has to do with Mark's wife, this all gets explained by the end of s1.

They revealed it already in the second episode, so it really wasn't that much of a deal or even mystery, in my opinion. It's more what it implies: why would she be the neighbor of Mark, why him and not the others, etc.
So far, the show isn't like Lost, with mysteries just for the sake of mysteries and nothing ever getting explained (apart from what exactly they do at Lumen, but that is the main plot of the whole show).

I discovered this last week and already caught up to the latest episode. What a good tv series. There was huge WTF at the beginning, but I like where they are going. And the concept of innies technically being separate beings but not having separate rights is so interesting moral/ethical concept to think about.

Excellent episode this week. And that's how you make viewers care about a previously undeveloped character and care even more than before about the protagonist.

i dont think this show is anywhere near lost, its pretty straightforward and not something to theorize that much as any normal show. only lindelof can pull this shit so the leftovers and watchmen were in fact very close to lost, probably his future lanterns will be the same which is why im very looking forward to that

The last two episodes were great, pretty dark.
Spoiler: | For all the meticulous planning and writing, they never so far addressed that such severe trauma on the innie would wreck havoc on hormons and nervous system. So Gemma would be a mess physically |

Yes, although there are moments where the trauma seems to seep through. I'm rewatching s01 with a buddy, and there's a moment when his outtie is very depressed, and they give his innie a special treatment with the psychologist ("trust me, he needs it"). He's asked to make a figurine with some plasticine, and he's sculpting the tree where his wife died.
Maybe the same with Irv and the door with the red arrow he sees in his dreams.

way to go to lose all that momentum after ep 6-7, much nonsense and weird, they really must deliver on the finale

Episode 8 was weird (though I suspect that also necessary) but this last one was pretty good.
