I refunded on Steam. I can still play on MS Store, but I don't think this game is for me, lol.
paradox games generally strike me as.. notoriously boring. unless you have an interest in the section of history or characters in question, it's hard to suffer through the highly abstracted gameplay. i feel like it is an acquired taste and i don't seem to have learned it myself although i did alright with Stellaris (you know, after it had dozens of DLC expansions and they re-tooled the gameplay entirely).
I can agree with this. As I've gotten older, I have a much bigger appreciation for history and have enjoyed reading books and watching movies/documentaries on WW2. In fact, I really wish I asked my late Grandfather about the African campaign when he was in the Army and stationed there. So I had tried and failed multiple times to get into the Hearts of Iron series but a coworker who loves these games actually took the time in HoI4 to do some coop and show the mechanics and now that game ended up being the one game on Steam I have played the most of. So now I want to take on this and EU4. He had told me that out of all 3 (CK2, HoI4, EU4), HoI4 was the easiest to absorb so now that CK3 is out I would "think" it would be easier to grasp than what I tried with 2. He had said that EU4 was going to be more difficult but I've been watching videos on it and I think I would enjoy it more as i really like the warfare side. So maybe we'll get a EU5 with an updated engine and better tutorial.
Played some more and overall it's probably the most complete PDX game on release in recent memory. Even without the inevitable dlc it's a solid game. The focus is a lot more on role playing compared to CK2. Also, it's a significantly harder game compared to its predecesor even for players familiar with the series like myself. If you play on hard with ironman turned on on your first playthrough you're going to have a bad time.
A lot of the annoying mechanics of CK2 were modified to be less troublesome and repetitive. There's an increased focus on court intrigue, so I expect a mod to play as a landless character to pop up sooner rather than later.
If you're new to the series don't touch the 867 start. It's a fucking massacre over there.
I tried the traditional Ireland unification campaign, but Sweden and others from outside the isles kept barging in, ruining the fun.
Then I saw that sub-Saharan Africa was filled to the brim with independent counties, not a single big boy around to bully the little guys, so I had plenty of room and time to just expand and spread my seed around the area.
Yeah, Ireland is a bit tougher this time around. Still doable but a bit more chance of just blowing up in your face than the relatively easy campaign in CKII.
The African Lord of War seems a fun path. Will give it a go. :>
They need to rework technology since it kinda forces you to have to grow big if you want to get out of tribalism. I just want to play tall as Dyre the Stranger's kids.
CK did it again.
03.00: "It's late, I should wrap this up."
*What felt like 5 minutes*
05.30: "Fuck."
I was trying to make the Igbo's (Nigeria) great again. Kinda got screwed over for humping someone a day before I made her my concubine (I forgot okay! ). De shamans were not happy.
Wife + three fuckbuddies is too much work. Got to reform dat religion.
Don't know if it is because of Wasteland 3 but the loading times are quite the positive in this game.
And while I usually hate extra launchers I do like that we get the option 'Resume' on it and we're back into the game in a few seconds.
lol, I keep wanting to try and was hyped when they said it was easier to get into compared to 2 but still am nervous to click on Play. Hoping I'm close to finishing Wasteland 3 and then I'll start...that is if I finish before AssCreed Valhalla comes out.
They need to fix religious fervor as it drops whenever a religious war is won or if there's a naughty bishop. And a whopping 10 for naughty bishops. Makes it so that Europe is riddled with heresies 50-100 years into the game.
They need to fix the AI because it loves its boats and attacking the player capital. You can camp two holdings outside your capital and you win most wars.
Am i just unlucky or is their a problem with male heirs dying in battle.
All my male heirs died in (minor and victorious) battles or died from injuries and a lot of vassals are also suffering from this, half my council is female cause of it.
This is getting silly.

You can forbid heirs and council members to become commanders. Otherwise it's a sure fire way to kill off unneeded heirs and antagonistic vassals. Just let them charge a 5x enemy army.

My heirs were not commanding any armies, my marshall was.
Am i missing an option to prevent a character for going into battle? I can't find it.
Characters die way to much imho, now they are almost certain to die after a couple of battles. I've had 6 males in one generation, 5 died cause of combat. And there wasn't even a single big battle with major losses at my side.

It depends on what kind of man-at-arms you have and if they are countering the enemy army or not. If you don't have something to counter cavalry expect people to die more frequently. Also, the prowess level of each character is very important in battle, on par with the martial rating. You can forbid important people from going into battle from the champions menu.
