Last episode was pretty good, but unfortunately it didn't change any of the huge flaws of the show.

But, it was entertaining and full of atmosphere - which is really how I would describe the show overall - despite my issues with it.

Taboo S1 - 6/10

Yeah, pretty much how I feel about it.

Also

 Spoiler:

Well, that was just one of a billion issues I had with the script.

I think, apart from how everything seemed randomly put together, my biggest issue was the script treatment of everyone not on Hardy's side.

They were complete caricatures - including every single person in the East India Company (even the gay good-guy was such a cliché) - and the King himself worst of all.

It was like a cartoon in most ways.

But a good-looking cartoon Smile

Really enjoyed it, in general well made, and quite original in contents and ideas.
1800's London is well done, full of dirt with first side effects of overpopulation.
Some flaws here and there, but nothing really unforgivable (some joint too precise, Delaney in general is always 1 step ahead but sometimes doesn't show how he does).
Liked in particular some of the characters: the chemist, Godfrey, even Zilpha has its purpose (even if just emotional purpose).

Watched 4 episodes, i don't think i can take much more. It's so cheesy (in a bad way), it fumbles, like it has some vague idea of what it wants to be and where it wants to go.

Reminds me of Arrow a bit, some dude with mysterious powers that was presumed dead and to everyone's surprise returns. Pretty lame and unoriginal idea overall, but sure, there's a few things to like, the anti-hero properties of the character for example. There really arent any charactars apart from him to like, thus far. There's characters that does a decent job, but they still remain pretty "meh". Nothing that makes me go "wow, can't wait until the next scenario with this cool / original / interesting character!", not even close.

First paragraph was acceptable, even though I completeley disagree with what you said in it.

But then comparing this to "Arrow" , had to stop reading immediately Laughing

If you can read; I was comparing the story, which is similarly cheesy. And it definitely struggles with a plot, you can probably defend it by saying "it's trying to be mysterious", but it's not what it really feels like, not to me at least.

His character is very hit / miss i think.. his mobile phone powers (communicate at great distances) isn't that cool. On the other hand, his power to blow dust into a fire and sloppily eat steak while mumbling mysteriously to oraly please his half-sister, well ok, that one is pretty cool! Laughing (no, not really).

I guess what doesnt sit well with me is how it manages to be super cheesy (which is accetable and expected for superhero stuff like Arrow, or Batman) and at the same time it tries to be mature and grim. It doesnt work.

The show isn't "trying to be mysterious", it's inherently mysterious cause we don't know what the main character went through in Africa after that shipwreck, which I suspect will be visited in future seasons. And when you say it's similar in cheese to Arrow, that's exactly what I meant with my previous reply.

You're entitled to not like it, like some others here are, of course, it's just that comparison that is so out of order Laughing

It is only out of order if you would compare the theme as a whole, i compared the character back story. A person disapears in far-away lands, his relatives believe he's dead, he returns from mysterious far-away lands with obtained mysterious skills.

Both series borrows from the typical Batman theme, all very wealthy characters, obviously having the typical Alfred character who helps (and often worries) about the main character. But yes the mature somewhat anti-hero theme is new, and apart from the back story + the typical Alfred character he does not resemble either Arrow or Batman or any superhero for that matter.

I haven't watched it yet but from the trailers I got a distinctive The Count of Monte Cristo vibe.

Some of that grotesque resembles the gothic / sensational novels of the late 19th century, so it doesn't bother me that things might appear over the top, since it reminds me of those genres so much. I don't care if it's unoriginal as long as it's well done.

I have only watched Episodes 1 and 2 but had the feeling that the main lead would carry this TV series alone ( I don't really know who Tom Hardy is nor care so ), it seems that has even worsened. I'll give it a watch, but yeah, it's hard to make a whole "adventure" series rely upon one character.

..and you should care about who he is, excellent actor.. check out Bronson, Warrior, Locke, Mad Max..

often(?) hired for his voice performances, which i personally think are a bit hit/miss..

I think this show is beneath him.

I think he's stepped into complacency territory.

I'm seeing a lot more repetition from him than I used to.

Doesn't make him a bad actor, just a predictable one.

That said, even the most godlike actor couldn't save this show from the utter dreck that is the writing.

Production values remain high, though.

It's a clear-cut case of buying your audience rather than earning it.

Even if the writing is bad, it doesn't mean he has to walk around like a zombie looking cool and droning out his lines. I like Hardy, but he's just bad in this one. Maybe I'm getting tired of his hums and his eye twitching.

Well, watched 2 episodes so far.

Rather liking it overall.

Not a fan of that mystery crap going on though. And i guess it will play a bigger role towards the end?
