For fighting people that will say something like "why spread all that thermal paste all over the cpu as opposed to the rice grain method? Sad" ?

..aand it seems that my Kaby died today. BSOD in the middle of work (using Internet browser). Reboot -> Asus mb logo on screen -> another reboot -> nothing on screen. I even took it out and ensured that it is not damaged (it wasnt). MB gives me random q-codes but the most recent one is 60. There is small chance that the actual reason might be my RAM which might be 'too fast' for Asus' current bioses. Reseting, reflashing what not bios didn't helped a bit.

New CPU is already ordered so I will either keep it or RMA my RAM if the machine behaves in the same way as with current CPU.

New CPU will also be delided so once you lose your virginity there is no going back. Smile

I'm Sorry but.... Laughing

I suppose, if you've done it for years, then this must have been the odd one, where it went wrong. Very Happy

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Yeah I've been doing this since good old Thunderbird with copper shims etc. Smile

Currently I'm still not sure is it RAM or the CPU. I hope I can get my new one tomorrow so then I will know what is causing this.

If it is my CPU the it will be probably the first component in almost 20 years what I managed to break. For example I had 7 different 2500K's so you can count how many CPUs I had during this time. Smile I would say my winning precentage is still quite OK. Smile

Noice! Some guys keep reporting that Asus' Maximus mbs are having very buggy bioses where mb can suddenly decide to push over 1,5V to the CPU even if you set 1,4 with LLC 5 or 6. AT boot with no OC stabiloty tools running!

Current status with the fastest RAMs is also a mess because some others are having similar problem to mine where mb posts random Q-codes on each boot.

Noice that someone at Asus has approved these bioses to be ready for the release.

I had an ASUS GPU 10 years ago which overheated, and a faulty ASUS Netbook which randomly didn't want to boot, since then I swore off the brand. I know they have a good reputation, but I never had any luck with them. My goto Motherboard/GPU brand is MSI now (yeah, Military++ rating and all that marketing fluff) but I've never had any issues with them, rock solid.

Slightly more on topic:

I refitted my MediaCenter PC to Kaby Lake last week, it was still on a i5 2400 CPU and I decided all the new decoding features and energy savings will be worth the upgrade so I bought an i5 7500, MSI B250M Pro-VH (microATX) and 16gb of G.Skill DDR4-2400 Value RAM.

Pulled the old motherboard out, put the new one in, reconnected the drives, booted back into Win10, some drivers installed and everything worked just the way as before. Things sure are faster though, and the system runs ~10°C cooler, so all in all good upgrade. Still need to test the iGPU performance, the old one really didn't cut it.

Next up I'll switch the system drive to a NVMe device Twisted Evil it does lots of usenet downloads, parity checks and repairs, unrars and other postprocessing, I'll definitely feel the difference compared to the first-gen SSD it currently uses.

Trip report on my i5 7500:

using it as my MediaCenter in the living room I tried the Dolphin Emulator yesterday with the gf... and it's fantastic. Only using the iGPU und DX11 with 1080p resolution, 720p internal and 2xMSAA I was sitting at a constant 60fps in New Super Mario Bros.

I hadn't tried Dolphin in quite a while and remember even my powerful desktop struggling, so 60fps on the iGPU is quite astounding to me. So the Dolphin guys did well and the upgrade was totally worth it.

For a delid CPU, with no OC yet, and also watercooling, those temps look like shit.

C'mon Boby you can do better than that can't you? Rolling Eyes

First of all we are comparing apples to oranges here. Sandy Bridge is totally different architecture which doesnt suffer from the heat issues like Ivy Bridge and newer ones do.

Secondly try to run your Prime longer than..what 1min?

Thirdly MSI Afterburner is very bad utility to show your CPU stats.

Fourthly neither 4,8GHz nor vCore 1,280V are 7700K stock values.

Practise, practise and practise. Eventually you will get better. Wink

Some preliminary overclocking.

Still havent tested 51x and 52x boots but so far looks quite promising in terms of load temps, fans' noise and 5GHz clocks. Currently there is no noise difference between CPU max load with Prime95 1344k custom test and idle. Smile

1,375V is not too much for daily use as the CPU wont run on 100% load constantly. Besides that I'm using adaptive voltage too.

Of course im gonna fine tune the volgate as soon as I find out the maximum multiplier for this CPU.

Probably the final settings:

Cache ratio: 46

I still need to run some AVX benches to check if I could rise multiplier from -3 to -2.

Between these three motherboards, are there any non-obvious reasons (not the number of ports and the like) to pick one over the others? Prices are the same:

Already have put together the needed parts for the upgrade.
Though in some categories i still have more than one component i need to decide between: Mobo, Case and PSU (and maybe GPU)

Will post my complete upgrade list on the weekend.
