They're up to 6.2 now, heh, and this flashcart doesn't support anything above 4.5 - so that counts out recent titles such as Animal Crossing.

yeah i was just really saying i guess that its a bit late on the "to use scale" because of we are so far ahead with the firmware already..
for test purposes ok... i guess, but shit I wonder how many really have a 4.5 and below 3ds right now :O |

Considering the 3DS automatically updates the firmware unless you have parental controls enabled, I'd say not many people will still be on 4.5 :\

Animal crossing is 4.5. Only Mario & Luigi is 5.1.
Animal crossing can't save on Gateway though because it saves differently than other games. But it works since it s 4.5.

Omg I need to get this gateway thingie then ! (For people who might be interested in it, 3DS XL in store that say copyright 2012 Nintendo are 100% 4.4.0).
Btw Sabin, I was bsing about Animal Crossing, seems like it won't boot at all. The original cartridge is fine though since it s still 4.5.
Anyway who would even play this game without saving, not like buying this game would kill anyone...

I'm actually even more interested since my 3dS xl is US and this video also shows Mario &. Luigi booting on 4.5.0, which is supposed to be needing 5.1.0.
Although I think this game just has an artificial version lock, just like some ps3 games and sooner or later new games will require new SDK apis. I bet you that this game isn't even compiled on 5.X anyway.

can you play all the latest games and a 3DS running 4.5.0? if not, it will never be as valuable as 3.55 ps3.

So far there are only 2 5.1.0 games and these will be playable on 4.5.0 with the upcoming Gateway update that allows you to spoof your firmware.
Sabin posted the news about it a few posts above.

meh i just don't see this having any longevity... ok so they spoof fw to make 2 more games playable, then nintendo releases 6.0.0 or whatever, where spoofing is no longer working, what then? if this was free then no problem, but paying money for something that doesn't guarantee every single game in the future will be working is a no no.

It still allows you to pirate DS games too, and you prolly know that a DS flash cart is quite costly.
The price isn't really that bad for something that plays 3dS AND ds backups, moreover it plays any region too.
The same happened with Sony and 3.41 then 3.50.... And it was better than nothing (the ps jailbreak dongle).

According to their website (could be bollocks but I tend to trust them now that 1.0 of it is out). If they can do it, then it's even more awesome :

just like in the PS3/360 scene,gateway is not the first exploit,the moment someone open the door,and people picked,they will find a way to exploit it again somehow,it's not just how useful the exploit it self for future,it's motivation also

serious hackers/crackers/coders will be all over ps4/xbone starting this fall, not something as trivial as vita/3ds. i mean many hackers, especially ones based in Russia couldn't care less about 3ds or anything nintendo for that matter.

I wouldn't call Vita "trivial ",itself looks pretty strong so far,aside for the PSP expliots,though,the console it self as pretty weak line up,I would like to have 3DS more then Vita.

the news it's pretty cool, but the problem is only one: if you have the 3ds and want to play the newest games (like the new pokemon coming in few months) or you have already updated your firmware thanks to the new games, you are pretty fucked up.
probably i will get screwed up another time before even trying it, like for the ps3. 
also, the hack can boot-up even region locked titles... so the fuckers at nintendo can switch the button when they want, but they just don't want for some fucking unfroseen reason... just fuck them.

Just received my gateway 3DS, quick review : so far works fine on every game I tried.
Doesn't work on Animal Crossing though, this is known, but I bought the original one anyway, so I can pirate every other one 
I can now pirate DS games too.
Only downside, as expected, is only 1 3DS rom per SD Card (not the case for DS roms though obviously).
Still, I'm really happy with my purchase
