Ok so I am on baseband 03.10.01 - is there any news of an unlock on this? I really need my iPhone on any network...
Do I have any options at all?

I think the newly released sn0wbreeze 2.2 has 'baseband prerservation' mode for creating 4.2.1 cfw. it uses the new greenpoison kernel 4.2.1 exploit.

But if i'm already on 4.2.1 with baseband 03.10.01 - how would I go about doing this?
Would I have to install 4.1 afresh, then upgrade to 4.2.1 with Sn0wbreeze preserving the baseband?
I guess I could backup right now while on 4.2.1, then go back to 4.1 without any of my data / programs, THEN use Sn0wbreeze to go up to 4.2.1 with my baseband preserved, and then restore from my 4.2.1 backup. Then while on 4.2.1 I should have the older baseband which I can unlock with ultrasnow?
Does that sound logical?

You CAN'T downgrade your baseband.
You need to wait till they finally bring out a new unlock for the current basebands.
It's rumored to happen after 4.3 gets released..

it shouldn't matter if they are just cracked .ipas that are backed up in itunes, only cydia based apps don't restore after an update.

Welcome to my life. Had to buy a new iPhone 4 here in the UK through Vodafone since ATT refuses to unlock the phones, and the baseband hasn't been hacked in basically half a year now.
They say they will finally release the unlock when 4.3 comes out - But I think they are full of shit, nor could I wait for 4.3 to come out.
At least you can officially unlock your iPhone if you really need to though. I'd just pay the money to pay off your contract and get it officially unlocked if you really need to do so. I didn't even have that option. So quit your bitchin'.

Well funny story, but I think my iPhone4 is factory unlocked (not been able to test yet).
I had an issue with my phone (which was locked to Three) and took it into a store. They swapped it over and I don't see how the replacement could have been locked to Three ... so my hope is it is unlocked!
Will find out tomorrow, saves paying Three £15 for a stupid unlock!

stfu, the iphone is still the best phone out there. I have an andriod device as well, and it's no where near as user intuitive. Either way, I'll probably just wait a month for 4.3 and then if no unlock, i'll pay Three their £15 blood money.

4.3 is likely to be launched at the iPad2 event this evening - so I suspect we will see a unlock for the current basebands released in next few days...

I wouldn't count on it. Rumor has it that they don't have shit hacked yet baseband wise as they are stuck, and they keep making excuses to make it appear they aren't releasing it for other reasons. (I don't really understand why they would continue waiting to release it at this point. 4.3 went gold, so there is no reason to hold back on releasing an unlock at this point.)
Even so, I don't understand why you don't pay the measly 15 pounds so you don't have to deal with that hacked unlocked crap and not being able to update like a regular person. 15 pounds is like nothing.

It's the concept I am against. The concept of having to pay to unlock a phone I've paid well over a grand for.
And your point about it being crap to hack unlock - I don't see why. I never had an issue when I unlocked my 3G via unofficial sources. It worked fine, and there is loads of reasons why I wouldn't want to just install the latest apple update anyway - so being careful and updating sensibly will be my policy regardless of how I unlock.
I do however agree on your 4.3 already gold point - maybe they are just full of shit. Either way, I need my phone unlocked before April - so if nothing is released, I will pay £15 then. But I would rather not, out of principle!

And if you weren't aware, not all of the unlocks have been totally bug free. There have been more then one hacked unlocks for different pieces of hardware at this point which have fucked said phones.
Not to mention you are loosing out on the latest baseband updates as well, which improve network performance bt at least some measurable amount.
Again, i'd pay the money and be done with it. 15 pounds is jackshit. If you can't afford 15 pounds after buying a 200 pound phone and paying 40 pounds a month for the service.. Stupid.
