After too much time, VLC 3.0 branch is finally live. Now supports HDR and 10-bit, proper hardware decoding via Direct3D 11 instead of previous shoddy DXVA support (not sure about rendering but it's probably included via D3D11 media API), HDMI pass-through etc.

Instead of VLC which video player do you all recommend
1 and 2 are still amazing.

All the others have caught up & surpassed it. |
It's all but useless. Although MPC-HC/MPC-BE have superior rendering control, they are essentially barebone players with slapped Lav / ffmpeg filters and decoders. Plus, VLC has some unexpected aces in the sleeve, such as video effect control at runtime (Tools -> Effects and Filters) without need for external shader pack, and built-in anaglyph 3d support which I didn't find anywhere else out of the box.
VLC tends to lag behind regarding some quality of life improvements, but I can't be angry with them, it's the crew behind x264 and ffmpeg (i.e. libavcodec, used pretty much everywhere), so they know their shit and integrate their own work into the product.
