Because they didn't want to change the keyframes of the animations. Bluepoint is great at remaking the visuals but I doubt they would be equally good in the gameplay department. It was a good decision not to touch any core gameplay mechanics.

Ah you specifically talked about the backstab, I misread, yea there is no reason not to change that animation, as long as the length is the same.
I would've preferred to if they changed all the other animations as well, even if the game plays somewhat diffrently, but I know there are many people who would hate that.
I belong to the camp of people who liked the FF7 remake direction, not a fan of 1:1 remakes as I can always replay the original game if I want to, same applies here.

Just beat tower knight. So far i'm really enjoying it. Graphics are damned good, and they nailed the combat... the sound effects in general are very satisfying.

I can't help but feel they made the game easier, though i havent played it in over a decade. I just dont remember being able to tank hits like i can (started with knight with fluted armor).

That's what I've been saying, but people keep parroting how aMaZiNg it looks. I just don't see it. The animations are so stiff, it's likely the main character has a broom up his ass.

i'm never exactly shocked to have bad animations since 90% of modern games looks like this i would say. same with AI, it's never good, as in 9 out of 10 times its bad and its not even mentioned any longer.

perhaps a little less with the filters and achievements and a little more effort in AI and animations... a man can dream, no? i guess too few people care or complain. as long as the environments are very good looking and gameplay is decent it'll get that 9.5/10.

I think recent games, especially with motion capture done right (but not necessary motion capture) have advanced a lot. I mean, RDR2 and GTA5 have superb animations. Perhaps the ragdoll physics are spotty sometimes, but keyframe animations are top notch. This was terrible when it came out, and is still terrible in 2020 on "next" "generation" consoles. Even Skyrim had better animations! Laughing

Skyrim is the fucking worst. I hate the animations in that game, all their games have terrible animations. its floaty as fuck with no weight. at least here it has weight i think. yeah RDR2 is good.

This looks very floaty as well. Heavier, I agree, but still floaty. The lack of synchronization of the animations is very jarring to my eyes. Skyrim's animations are at least faster, so they are over quickly. Here is animation is l o n g g g g and it seems animations cannot be interrupted. Once it has started, it has to complete.

The game is gorgeous but the animation is almost 1:1 compared to the original, which was already low budget and janky back then.
Everyone who complains about it being easier, I don't think the devs changed much in ways of gameplay/mechanics, Demon's Souls is simply by far the easiest Souls game overall.
All of us who played it back then as our first Souls game got buttraped so much until everything clicked and we still have that anal tear in our memory, but since then the games have been getting progressively tougher and it wasnt't difficult to adapt to the new difficulty from game to game. Bloodborne and Sekiro for example make all of Demon's Souls seem like a tutorial area.

So I finally got a PS5 and demons souls, of course.

I like it quite a bit overall, as expected of demons souls. Some parts look absolutely stunning. But at the same time I can't help but feel a bit disappointed.

They opted to not change anything gameplay related, which is something I would have liked them to do.
Like, replace some items with better ones (souls specifically) for new game+.
Or add shortcuts or whatever to the longer boss runs
Or make defeating a boss while summoned give you an ephemeral eyes stone instead of making you human form immediately (would make it more convenient to get summoned repeatedly)
Or add more ways to manipulate world tendency to make it less annoying

They did nothing like that, unfortunately.

But for some reason they did decide to change non-gameplay stuff.
Like they gave some NPCs facial animations, but they're terrible with no animation blending and seemingly set to 200% animation strength making them look way exaggerated and stupid.
I preferred no facial animation to this half-assed shit.

They changed the music to be more *epic* like Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 but it doesn't always fit the tone, and the charm of the original music is almost completely lost for many tracks. Sometimes less is more.
The nexus too got all new music that destroys the original somber, lonely but safe mood imo (like RE save rooms).
The maiden in black seems to have gotten breast implants and botox lips. she looked better in the PS3 version. I dont like her look now.

Then there's the voice acting. some original voice actors return and they're quite good. I like that.
the maiden in black got some lines changed for the worse though and her delivery isn't as charming as it used to be either.
Some voice actors are new and they mostly feel like normal people instead of the proper Souls weird insane people.

And what were they thinking adding footstep sounds to soul form as if that was a bug or oversight? It's part of the world building and lore that you don't hear your normal footsteps when in soul form, while you do in human form. At least make it ghostly sounds or something...
Also you were able to open the menu and change your gear and stuff and see enough through the menu to be able to still move around. So you could change stuff in battle if necessary.
Now? The menu blocks the entire view. You can still run around but you see nothing. Stupid change.


I'm also having a really hard time getting summoned or summoning others.
This might be mostly because of not enough PS5s out there for now, but it could also be related to them having like 25 different servers now instead of just like 2 or 3.
I don't know if you can connect to people on other servers but if you can't that'd explain a lot and be fucking stupid.

My opinion of Bluepoint definitely dropped after this.
Maybe this is all great if you never played the original but to me it feels off. During my first playthrough I regularly felt the urge to play the original instead when some different music track started on a boss or I saw some enemy that just didn't look as cool as it used to even though it has 100x the polygons...
I've gotten used to some of it now and I mean, it's still Demon's Souls and so it's fun but I just feel this remake could have been better.




oh I just remembered.. you can't delete characters. They're all in one save file on the system level so that's no solution either, and there's a limit of 10 characters.
so if you play this make sure not to make throwaway characters until that is fixed...which hopefully it will be

I checked in today to see if any issues have been addressed, and unfortunately nothing has changed

you still can't delete characters and the messages are still broken


nobody seems to give a fuck about patching anything over there
