It's funny - I bought Yakuza 0 not knowing it was a prequel. I also briefly played Yakuza 3 which showed me the story of the previous few games and when I played Yakuza 0 the story sounded familiar - it being a prequel makes sense now .
I have to say: this game is really well made. The characters, animations, voices ... it feels like a well made movie and really drags you into the game's world. The 80's setting is a big bonus too for me - always love games set in that era.
In 2005, a legend was born on the PlayStation 2 – the legend of Kazuma Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima, in his video game debut with Yakuza. Now, 11 years after that release, a new generation of players will be able to experience the incomparable action and drama of the Yakuza series with the rebuilt-from-scratch HD remake exclusive to PlayStation 4, Yakuza Kiwami. Kiwami adds tons of new story depth over the PS2 original, new distractions around the in-game setting of Kamurocho, added side quests, updated mechanics and combat, and much more. Topping it all off, Yakuza Kiwami will be getting both physical and digital editions, and for the first time in the west, will exclusively feature a re-recording of the original Japanese dialogue.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Kazuma Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima (and the main protagonist of SEGA’s long running Yakuza franchise) will find out exactly how much people are willing to sacrifice for family – be those ties through blood or bond – when Yakuza 6: The Song of Life releases in the West. The game is coming to consoles only on PlayStation 4, and thanks to the new “Dragon Engine,” is the most advanced Yakuza title to date. From the unparalleled realism of the new setting of Onomichi, a beautiful, sleepy port town in Hiroshima Prefecture, to the latest evolution of Kamurocho, the biggest red-light district in Tokyo, Yakuza 6 is the ultimate iteration the game’s blend of gritty crime story, hyper-explosive combat, and all the vices and distractions those locales have to offer.

Is this game Saints Row (i.e. utterly retarded) kinda fun, or Sleeping Dogs ching chong kinda fun?
Neither. It may look GTA-esque but it's far from it. It's very story driven, a lot of dialogues. It's one of those games you just have to try for yourself. It definitely wasn't my cup of tea.
Its the closest game series to Shenmue, if you ever played it. Otherwise there isnt really anything else you could compare it to, the uniqueness is one of it's strengths, a hate it or love it thing.
It's like Shenmue with lots of very japanese things.
Usually serious, crime drama, dialogue heavy main story but the side quests can range from serious to weird and nonsensical.
if you're into japanese culture and like anime like gintama and stuff like that you'll probably enjoy the weird humorous stuff.
From the 2 games you mentioned it's definitely closer to sleeping dogs though.
Likot Mosuskekim, Woodcutter cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Elephant.
I never played Shenmue but I know it's a highly acclaimed series. From the trailers I can't make out what this game's about, but comparing it to Shenmue says a lot I guess. I also can't seem to find a nicely priced used one
I'll definitely give it a go if I find a copy for the right price. Thanks.
As a remake, Kiwami is a triumphant success. Not only is it leaps and bounds more playable than the PS2 original, the additional scenes help flesh out character motivations. This all makes the story of Kiryu’s rise feel more special, and it’s a perfect continuation for those who recently played Yakuza 0. There are some disappointments, though, as just roaming around Kamurocho feels like a step backwards from previous games that featured multiple cities to explore, but that’s just an unfortunate side-effect of being a remake of a much-less ambitious title. The new bells and whistles make Yakuza Kiwami a worthwhile time no matter if you’ve played the original or not.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 briefly appeared on Taiwan's PlayStation Store. The listing has since been removed, but a translation states that it will run on the engine powering Yakuza 6--the most recent original entry in the series.
While it was live, the page listed a release date of December 7, 2017.
what's with the explosion/spell-effects whenever he hits someone? Looks absolutely retarded, doesn't fit the theme at all. Might have worked in Pokemon or something.

Japanese are weak and cant handle blood
Haha but there's plenty of very gruesome Japanese animes and movies.. plenty of blood in games like Dark Souls too
No i don't get it, not for a game like this with very realistic characters etc. Really odd.
the combat is arcadey, think of it like Tekken, they have shitloads of effects there too. Yakuza games have their deep and serious side and then they have their very quirky and weird wtf side, it's a love it or hate it thing.
The sidequests are some of the most batshit insane stuff, like buying porn magazines for a little boy and sneaking around his mother to give them to him, or teaching a dominatrix how to publicly humiliate her s&m slave, yea it's quite unique stuff to put it mildly

Mostly very niche things though.
