Can i dualboot win7 just fine if i install it now on another disk?
Or do i need to mess around with the bootmanager to get win8 back? (as this was before the case with installing XP next to win7, always had to do win7 last otherwise it was a big hassle to get back in your win7 after installing xp)

As far as I remember, 7 and 8 share the same bootloader, so I don't think there should be issues. At most, you may need to restore the 8 boot loader after installing 7, by booting with 8 restore disk and running one command line call.

idk if they do, because certainly the looks are different, but don't know if they just added a proper UI element to the win8 version of the bootmanager (because the win7 is just dos look, while win8 one has the "sleek" blue one with mouse and extra options)

Could be, but certainly the boot process has not changed. So if the "DOS"-y look doesn't bother you, it will work fine.

Before you start, make sure you have a recovery boot disk or USB, just in case. If there are problems, you can PM me or email me directly to recover quickly.

Without recovery haha, my USB stick is in Amsterdam still (i forgot it there), and no dvd drive Razz
So i extracted win7 to hdd and just installed via that.
Didn't boot yet into 8.1, but i presume it will be fine.

If you want start on a win8 looking OS just install win10 RC.

I seriously don't use start that often. And I really couldn't care less. In fact I started liking this 'start' menu over the old one. I need a program - bam it's on my 'desktop start'. And I don't have stupid folder within folder within folder in the start menu.

I think a lot of negativity comes from 'pc elitists'. And I admit in the begging I was also: amg no start, that sucks ass. But I adapted. I evolved Very Happy

If there was a way to actually rebind WinKey+S to simple Windows Key it'd be alright and I wouldn't even need something liek StartIsBack. I hate Metro screen because it's distracting - I need to open something quickly and it opens fullscreen launcher.

(Doesn't have everything but it's the most recent full ISO without doing the integration yourself.)

Or the ESD file "9600.17053.winblue_refresh.141120-0031"

After using WIn 8.1 for a couple of months now, I'm glad DA3 'forced' me to upgrade. It's stable, fast and it has some nifty new features

Agreed, it's better than W7 when you put the start menu back and disable all the metro junk.

Yup, could never go back to 7 now. I just ignore the 'bolt-ons'.

i tried to upgrade to 8.1 and oh my. Now first off, i actually liked it. The new start menu etc. all fine. And it run considerably well enough.

Until ... until the freeze of death ... well, windows stopped responding ...

and until you waited half an hour for it to recover and were unwise enough to hard boot ...

i ended up with a corrupt C: (not recoverable at all, unless i completly reinstalled windows, i.e. deleted the partition and began a new.

Well, 4 installations later without finding the cause (and being sure it isn't my SSD, nor my Ram nor anything else ...

Well, i am back to windows 7 Smile

I think I'll keep a copy of that for myself, thanks Newty! It's a shame it's a webinstaller though, rather than downloading the entire batch of selected apps for an offline install.. but seriously, that thing looks incredible. It's only missing a handful of apps I usually use too.

That reminds me, isn't one of the new features of Win10 supposed to be a repository in powershell something akin to APT/YUM/RPM in linux that lets you install software with just a command? That would be sweet, as one could easily write command and execute them after fresh install. And also it may reduce amount of PUPs. Haha, nice one, but one can dream, right? Laughing

PS: i knew Nanite, but I just realized I didn't actually knew how exactly it works. Does it install all the software with defaults (like people who click Next-Next-Next-Install) or does it only install software that you want? For example if you were to install a Flash, would it ALSO install McAffee or whatever they bundle with it?

Yeah but that will be the case anyway if you want an offline installer like that.

Tho i found this for Ninite: https://ninite.com/help/features/offline.html
Seems that with the pro version you can have those offline installers, testing it now if it's truly offline.

Personally, i would keep it at 50-60GB, but that's the VERY least that i think an OS drive should have (because of temp files and other random shit that put itself on the OS drive).
Just pure OS and nothing at all, you would need about 20-25GB.. But i wouldn't do that Razz

I like at least 80GB for the main OS. I use my 120GB SSD but space can quickly go down. If I want to use Hibernation then that is 16GB right there with my RAM.

I've always kept my OS partitions at 65GB, which leaves more than enough space for cache/temp files as well as the day-to-day standard programs I use. I don't have any creativity suites though, so yeah.. nothing really major taking up space. Since getting my SSD I've just left it all as 111GB (usable) as it gives around 70GB to play around with for heavy SSD-utilising games.

Can anyone recommend me a software to get the clock on my second monitor? Switching taskbars or primary screens when i watch tv or movies is too much of a hassle. I'd rather have the clock on both screens at all times.
