ok after much messing around and various hardware deaths I am now downloading XP SP2 may edition and moving my main machine back to XP.

The reason for this is not vistas fault. Yes it is overly hardware hungry.. being that the main chunk of the processing power is used up by the constant indexing and "3d" features.. bare in mind that linux does both of these things at 0 cost to the user performance, it also does them a fair amount better. Still, with a few updates from MS (SP1.. ) and better driver / application support (mainly Nvidia and VLC) this would be a very usable OS.

Overall I love vista, forgetting the slight niggles with performance on lower end machines it really does the job well and the UI additions are fantastic. I WILL be moving to vista full term once the performance issues for older machines are sorted, for that I need to look mainly towards Nvidia.

Either way, XP here I come.. again Razz

I'm buying a new PC in a few days, so theres a thing i need to know first.
I read at some gaming forum a guy who said you need to have Vista 64bit to have any use of more then 2 gb ram. Is that true or will Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit do the trick?
Thinking of having 4gb of RAM for the new PC....

yeah you need the 64bit version to use all 4 gigs, I have 4 in my pc and am using the 32bit version of vista and it only will let me use 3.3gig. I am going to install the 64bit version sometime soon because I have heard that most people don't have many problems with it.

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one

Thanks for the info there. Much appreciated Smile

So what about installing Vista several times, is it ok so long as you dont change the hardware too much or can you just re-install x number of times?

For the 64bit ver of Vista you can't use a intel Core Duo 2 E6850 right?

Sorry for my noobyness about OS'

Why would you not be able to use the C2D? Afaik all C2D models are 64bit processors.

And once you apply the boot loader crack, it wouldn't matter how much you change the hardware.
