News flash: all of Apple's monitors use the exact same LG panel Dell uses in the 2311 and 2711. Just at twice the price and calibrated worse. Dell's Ultrasharps are some of the best IPS monitors you can buy. The only better ones are professional ones from Eizo for example. Nice try, but whoever told you that is a clueless fuck. LG's IPS panels are popular for a reason - they are very good. However, the panel being good does not mean a monitor built around it is good; like I said, if you take Apple vs. Dell, Dell comes out better. And they literally use the *exact* same panel model (LED Cinema Display vs U2711; the U2711HM now uses a different panel).

Something like Samsung's S27A850D is indeed good, but it's slightly more expensive than Dell's U2711 and surprise surprise, the calibration on it is terrible. See http://flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1331899332 for example - to save you the trouble of reading it, his conclusion is: just like Dell's offerings inferior to Eizo's monitors, colour gamut and calibration are horrible out of the box, black depth is not as good as Dell. Upside is that it does not have the same grainy coating Dell's monitors have, so white is actually displayed a little more pleasant.

Image Quality is overrated, fluidity is what matters in games!

Uh, that whole message was about colour uniformity and calibration, so naturally that's what my statement was about. You're the one who came barging in with your 120 Hz obsession.

And you may value fluidity more, but considering I can run most games at 60 FPS capped just fine there's very little smoothness to gain. I play almost everything at maximum quality settings, so at that point I find IQ more important.

Again though, preference is between IQ and fluidity. And there's no TN panel that can compete with even mediocre IPS panels when it comes to IQ.

I guess 60 fps on 120hz must feel at least weird or slow ?

But Also not the same as 60fps on 120hz old crt monitors. The way refresh rate works on lcd screens is a bit different. 60hz on crt felt terrible while on cld it is good.

No, 60 FPS on 120 Hz looks exactly the same as it does on 60 Hz. It just means that every other frame, the monitor does not change its image. Just like 30 FPS at 60 Hz.

Problem is that "FPS" is a bad term to use. Frametimes are what matters and if they're irregular, no matter how fast your monitor refreshes, it will still display those frames in an irregular pattern. The difference is that at 120 Hz that pattern just shifts; depending on your actual frametimes it may appear smoother, but it also may very well appear worse. If you do get EXACTLY 33.33ms EVERY SINGLE FRAME - 30 FPS will look smooth. But you don't. There will always be frames at 25ms (40 FPS) and frames at 40ms (25 FPS). And that's why "30 FPS" rarely looks smooth.

I see. That's true. Radeonpro shows 33.33 when running in 30fps and about 16ms when running smooth 60fps. That + tb and 2frames render ahead gives smoothest gameplay for me.

On the topic - I wouldnt say a bad thing about dell ips now. I've looked long and hard almost a year ago for monitors and got u2312hm. 23 ips dell panel. It might be because I only had TN before that, but that dell looks fantastic. Blacks are black, viewing angles are fantastic and so on. Really, Really happy with it. + it have aspect ratio option in osd, if playing some old 4:3 games, there i no problem. Also colors reproduction seems great. Unlike my old tn samsung it passes all lagom lcd tests flawlessly.
And build quality is outstanding as is the stand (no pun intended)

But It have some things that might annoy some people.
There is no hdmi out which is a bummer !!! Only vga, dvi and displayport. I wonder how I will connect ps4 when it comes out. Dvi is taken by pc, vga by 360... so hdmi->displayport for ps4 ?

There is an antiglare coating which might appear grainy to some people. Especially on white backgrounds. Some people at overclock.net took the aa coating off succesfully. I don't mind it.

You do realise that your videocard and pretty much every other videocard from the last I dunno..3? years has DP out right? Just get a mini-DP -> DP cable, plug your PC in via DP and then you can use an HDMI -> DVI converter for the PS4. PS4'll have separate audio outputs still, so hook that up to your receiver or if your on-board has S/PDIF in, use that.

DP -> HDMI requires an active converter, which are much more expensive than a simple HDMI -> DVI plug.

LG is the *only* company that even makes IPS panels. Samsung markets theirs as IPS, but it's PLS.

So really you've only got two choices. Monitors with LG IPS, or Samsung PLS.

Anyways, I prefer HP's build myself. Typically a little cheaper then the Dell panels and use the same quality LG panel. The reason they are cheaper is because they are missing a lot of OSD functions / built in scaling and what not which is actually a benefit if gaming as their response time is slightly faster since the image doesn't have to pass through as much stuff first.

Although i'm a bit upset that HP hasn't released their updated 30'' LED model yet. My guess is that Dell did a deal with LG to be the only buyer of their 30'' LED panels for a certain period of time. I've been wanting to buy a 30'' LED panel for some time but i'd rather avoid Dell's offering and just wait for HP to eventually release their own.

And yeah, i'll never touch TN again. Ever. 120hz is nice and all but it doesn't make the experience so much better that it is worth such a huge degradation in image quality. Further, anything higher then 60hz is worthless if you don't have the hardware to push it anyways.

The LG monitors themselves are shit compared to the other manufacturers IMO. Just because they make a good panel doesn't mean they know how to put it all together right.

Well technically, there's also Japan Display Razz
But yeah, LG are the only ones really. AUO don't do IPS either, they did their own VA panel that has very similar properties (AHVA).

Cheaper? o_O

Quite the opposite here, HP is slightly more expensive - not sure why though. Dell's calibration is slightly better, but overall there's very little difference in IQ really. Dell's just more popular here because they usually come with more inputs at slightly lower or same pricing. Good monitors either way and HP is still way better at calibrating their shit than Apple. With the iPhone 5 they finally got it right, so maybe the next Apple Displays will be better, although nothing will ever justify that 100% price hike Razz

i know you said "IMO", but do you have slightest proof to back up your claim? usually reviewers seem to ignore LG monitors and gives way too much attention to a single brand Dell. i'm not exactly sure why they do that, maybe ignorance or they are getting paid by dell. if you actually find review of LG and Dell monitors using same exact panel and compare numbers, you'll see that they are identical mostly, well duh, it's the same panel.

also, there are plenty cases where Dell force extreme overdrive, which isn't optional, and result is very high overshoot (google it). LG monitors allows you to customize how much overdrive you want to use. so LG doesn't know how to use their own panels? bull-fucking-shit.

Building the panel and building the complete package are two different things. The LG monitors themselves tend to suffer from shitty stands compared to HP/Dell. Further, you say that Dell/Whomever tend to overdrive the panels to much compared to the LG brand monitors when the inverse is usually the case. The LG monitors in particular just usually have weird issues.

Again, just because the panel is the same doesn't mean the rest of the hardware driving that panel is.

not really, it's just dumb people usually comparing LG's cheapest TN monitors to Dell's expensive IPS offerings. as i already said, if you compare same panel monitors from LG and Dell you'll see that often they have same exact stats and picture quality, not only that but LG's monitors are cheaper.
