I'd be interested in knowing what sources it uses. Do you have it laying around somewhere?

LeoNatan wrote:
Regarding NFO updating, can't a script be created to automatically pull data from imdb, cine21, thetvdb, like Plex, XBMC, etc. do?

Indeed. That would be the smart-thing® to do.

One thing that needs to be dealt with if this is going to happen. And it is about time, too.

The webpage needs a make-over. A fresh design with all those things planned for.

Anyone up for the job?

Who knows where this might take us. Maybe even to a forum upgrade Very Happy

I don't have the script at my usual PC anymore I think. I'll try to remember to take a look at it the weekend to see if I can dig it up somewhere. I'm pretty sure it's with my other tcl scripts.

I cannot commit to a full development cycle, but I can help as needed and as free time permits me. For instance, I am willing to take a look at a Tapatalk integration as well as possible forum upgrade.

Same, willing to help but very busy at the moment.

Looked for the scripts, couldn't find it anymore, not even my other tcl scripts Sad Probably died with my hdd crash a while ago Sad

OK, I think I'd qualify also as web designer. Did not do any total conversion of phpbb til now though, but I think that shouldn't be a biggie either. Anything special you'd like to see for the page?

Downloading PHPBB3 and it's GDK right now and will take a look at it.

phpBB2 -> phpBB3 shouldn't be too big of an issue. There are conversion scripts out there that should take care of most stuff. I do wonder about all the extra stuff we have here, like ignore user, quick quote, etc. I don't think phpBB3 has that right away.

TBH, I'm lately a fan of less is more and try to be very minimalistic regarding the design, so whatever I might come up with, might actually be considered quite shitty Laughing

So I'm currently playing around and just testing stuff and didn't touch any of the phpbb styles right now, but as far as I can see, it shouldn't be all too complicated...

Here an idea I had for the header:
http://pumpaction.prestige-gaming.net/nfo/

Don't mind the shitty code Smile or the missing content ... or the missing functionality Laughing
(works so far in chrome, opera, and mobile shizzles, no ie)

Once you are logged in, it should display your username instead of account and on click reveal your menu to log off or access your profile and whatelse is possible.

A search field'd be always present at the top right with the option to go to advanced.

Once logged in, you'll also get an icon for the PM and a quick link to the newest posts in the header. Clicking on the logo should give you the option to switch to the forum/nfo's or reviews.

TBH I'd love to style the forum itself a little like wp 8 but again, I guess not everybody is a friend of that Smile

And I'm not sure if that "shine" on the logo should even stay...

*fiendishly rubs hands together* Great we have some designers!

I decided we should use some sort of colaborative version control system to keep track of changes and keep everything about the development in one place. I have my eye on either GitList or InDefero.

http://gitlist.org/
http://www.indefero.net/

Once we get a platform set up we can start with the design aspect first. The main web site would be priority, while the forum would be mainly modernizing the current layout and adopting it to any phpBB3 quirks.

Code (either html or php) should not be an issue at this stage. The designs can be photoshop based until we get something decent together and can be dissected later and put into html. We agree on a development browser and get everything functioning in there layout-wise first (get ready for firefox Smile) then we adapt.

After this stage is complete we begin by breathing some life into the stale-piece of meat with some sweet php coding and ajax.

Leave your thoughts.

There is no pressure on anybody from anyone. Any help will be appreciated. I am short on time as well, that's why I'm hoping I can get a few helping hands to join in to speed up the process. Any help will be appreciated. The only requirement is that if you do offer help on a particular area is that you keep your word and get it done - asking for help if you get stuck or anything will not get you hung either, help will come.

The back-end is PHP OO (object oriented) with a very light templating framework I threw together. Everything is mostly custom built without any public frameworks in use. Some code is already written, but some will have to be cooked up or modified. We will get to that in time.

Or use Bitbucket (I assume we want a private repo?) maybe? I always use Bitbucket (both personal and business, hence I have an unlimited account there) and it's rock stable and I'm pretty sure private repos are supported even for free accounts.

Regarding the coding part, what OS is running behind the hump? I for one would prefer to use ASP.NET, it codes a lot faster than PHP and at least has a decent IDE.

One thing I'd love to see for this site/forum is a native mobile version (adaptive or responsive) as a lot of users would be using phones/tablets to browse the place - and that's only ever going to increase. If you have a nice modular design, you'd only need a few media queries to do it.

That would be the aim as well. More work design wise in that aspect than it is code-wise. So by all means Smile

Its linux and apache with mysql. Tried, tested and free.

IDE's are a matter of taste and what you are accustomed to. PHP has some great ones too, PHPed to mention one. As far as visual development does, I find that they get in the way of getting a web site done and generate all hell HTML/CSS wise. It is best done by hand.

Looks much like GitLab.

Yes. A private repository. Sounds nice, although for only five users. The thing is I much rather use a repository under my complete control, including the server. Call it picky, I call it being in control.

There are upsides and downsides about using a private server. When your server is down, you are pretty much fucked. The same applies to public hosting ofcourse, but when you use a well known company (e.g. github, bitbucket), it's not very likely to happen.

One Yes for ditching NFO-section. It's old, barely useless and many of us are moved on.

It's nice to see how this community has changed since the early days. Cheap games and proper sales made games' pirating boring. Smile
