I agree with the PM stuff but I don't think it should be mandatory.
Posting it on a thread just like that is dumb (sadly, and even more with what we've been seeing lately in the section) but if they want to they should go ahead and do it.
Just don't complain when some scum takes it without saying a word.

The gifter will know who he gave the key to and the one on the other hand will most likely thank the gifter via PM. Whether someone places a big "OH YOU ROCK THANK U SO MUCH!!!!" openly afterwards is his business.
Invite only and/or mandatory high post count requirements are just stupid. Just put it on 100 to prevent new regs getting in. |
This isnt an issue if people provide keys by PM, or if a person thanks via PM. The issue is when a key is posted to the public and it gets taken without a word. This type of behaviour breeds anger and frustration with other members of the forum and frankly, its a shitty thing to do to the community.

They missed a key free key, deal with it. I don't like what the lurkers do when not even saying thanks, but that's between the lurker and the key distributor, and NOT the rest of the community once the key has been redeemed. Perhaps the distributor has learned his lesson the next time around or perhaps he doesn't care.
I think that those who writes them in public don't want to bother with replying and so on, and just want the key out there and be done with it. I'm sure there are different scenarios though.
Bottom line and from my perspective. When i buy/obtain something, i won't let anyone dictate how i should distribute it.

+1
It's not that I manage to grab anything anyway, I always see the threads when it's already too late.

The rules are set to help promote the section and bring the community together. If people don't want the section it will be removed. If people don't mind having a key taken without thanks then they can state that as a preference when posting the key.
My role here is to help the overall community, part of that is enabling and managing parts of the forum that need it. The section was created to stop the issue of keys going missing, if it isnt doing that it will be changed until it does. If the community doesn't want or care we can just scrap it.
"Perhaps the distributor has learned his lesson" - This is exactly the issue, people shouldn't need to learn a lesson, they should be able to trust the community they are within. We are here to help facilitate that trust and will continue to do so until it is deemed unnecessary.

Taking what i say a bit out of proportion now. What i'm saying is, my key, my rules.
It's always a case of who gets there first. This section is really good to have even though there are people who take the keys and don't even have the decency to thank the giver.
If you want this section to improve i guess the only options are to try to enforce the rules you dictate or set the post count required to enter this section higher with if possible a possibility to invite or grant access to trusted members below the requirement.

I think the issue is less about thanks and more of a notification that a key has been taken so others don't try in vain.

There is a plan to solve the issue. It will simply take some time to implement.

equally as disappointing as pm'ing someone and being too late. But i was too late, and i feel lucky just by getting the possibility to receive a free key from the generous members we have here.

[sYn] wrote: | See, its an interesting point. I agree that making it "invite only" isn't right, but I suspect that's not exactly what Waldo has in mind. The reality is we could up the post count until the issue stops, but that would exclude a number of active, contributing members of the community who deserve access as much as someone with 5k, 10k, 40k posts.
A better system would be a well maintained group in which members gain access at a specified point (a post count for example) but can also be granted upon proof of contribution. Now it is more likely that the members being granted access would be a one time deal at the start of the section to ensure that people currently here, participating don't lose out, but there is no reason a system like that couldn't work. We just need to be sure we don't make it a "buy in" type system, thats no good for the community.
Either way the way the activity we are currently seeing is exactly what the section was designed to avoid, so something needs to change. People acting like that devalues the community and creates anger/frustration between members. It needs to end, hopefully we'll see some change soon. |

but why u seted it up at first at 500 posts, then i was gone for a couple of days and when i came back - boah! 850 posts !? I think 500 posts was just fine.
The whole idea is to give keys away. With those post count rules i think the whole situation is about to reduce as much as u can the permission to that section for a lot of members, just so other with a lot of posts could easiely grab a key, ofcourse for those the rules are perfect, but for someone like me that means that i could never have access to that section, just becasue i dont like to post when i have nothing to say.
I read that forum from 2007, and i registerd myself in 2010, so i think i deserve access to that section, can't say im from those "lurkers" or newly registered members just for the keys ...

Are you planning to give some stuff away too? That can be done on other threads like in the free game keys or game deals thread.
