you ain't seen my Galaxy Note II |
Oh, those 'phones' really make no sense. One guy at the uni has Note, and every time I see him using this tablet when he's speaking to someone, makes me wanna punch his idiotic face -.-" |
Well it sure is made for big people like myself (6.3") Also nothing beats:
1) a 3100mah battery that lasts >2 days with three push-mail accounts, full Skype (not just some process like in iOS) running in background, lots of calls. My 4S lasted 5-6 hours with this load. Mophie juicepack wasn't much help either.
2) two windows mode is truly amazing, can't live without it anymore
3) the digitizer is another thing I use daily, sketching stuff on the go when I don't have my Cintiq
4) The design, the build - flawless
So if you need a reliable device that can hold a 1-2 day trip without charging, if you work in creative industry and you actually use it for work, then Note II is unbeatable.
I can't imagine what could I possibly replace it with. Maybe the new Razr Maxx HD but it has no pen or double-window mode.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

How are S3's superior? They've got a better calibrated display, but I don't see how they are superior otherwise. That's what makes the N4 so good, the specs it has for its price - not just its price.

Removable battery, expandable storage, better battery life, slightly bigger screen, wolfson DAC, probably better build quality since its LG and probably better camera too. Also didn't perform very well on benchmarks, not that they matter much.

Better GPU? What the fuck are you smoking Paintface
If there's one front where the S3 is pretty terrible for its price, it's the goddamn GPU. The US S3 is better than the international version (Adreno 225 instead of the crappy Mali-400). N4 uses an Adreno 320, now take a wild guess which of the three comes out on top.
@ ivan: forgot about the storage, that is indeed the only point where it has a substantial advantage.
Battery is debatable, unless you do a lot of battery swapping; I don't and it's been only recently that my Desire's battery has gone downhill, well over 2.5 years after buying it so removable battery is a moot point. That said, the battery IS serviceable - it's just not a clip-on back cover, but unscrew it and you can replace the battery just fine.
Bigger screen is not a good thing in this case; the N4 has an ever-so-slightly higher PPI (1280x768 @ 4.65" vs 1280x720p @ 4.7") and even though it's uncalibrated, it's also IPS and not oversaturated like the S3. Battery life will probably improve with software, as it beats the S3 on WiFi, it's cellular that costs more power right now, although it could've been better. Qualcomm's DAC in their S4 is on par with the Wolfson Samsung used so that's not an argument.
I'm sorry, but even now, after huge price drops the S3 is still 50% more expensive for what essentially is an inferior device on many points. The only upside it has is its SD storage. For the price of the N4, it's ridiculously good. Just a shame it's so fucking big

In Sweden the N4 is the same price as an S3 - in some cases you can even buy an S3 for less.
If the N4 had been priced close to what it is in the US )$300) I'd probably replace my S3 with one. Not because I have anything against my S3, in fact, I love it, but:
- The price-point, if it was $300, would make me switch
- I love trying out new devices and tech!
But for now, I see no reason to get an N4..

You're lucky then (or are those S3 prices on contract?), because the S3 is still a good 480-490 EUR here without contract.

No I bought mine without a contract.
But we're not lucky - both the S3 and N4 is 520 EUR. Yep.

Ah wait, Sweden has no Play Store either right? Then no, what you're getting is not the proper price. It's supposed to be 350 EUR or 280 GBP

By "no Play Store", you mean one in Swedish? I wouldn't know anyway, there's not a single device or piece of tech I ever use in Swedish. Can't do it, I set everything to English.

Yeah so basically, you're getting retailer scam prices. I don't get why Google haven't set up their store for more countries, but in those countries even in brick & mortar stores you get it substantially cheaper. Mediamarkt Germany sells it for 395; obviously there's always gonna be some margin, but still nowhere near S3's and the likes. Closest thing is a One X (which is a good 60-80 cheaper than an S3).

Here the 16gb N4 is $360 (unlocked) and the 16gb S3 is $650 (locked to a carrier).
Seems like a no brainer if you aren't getting a contract discount (S3 is $160 with a contract, N4 only sold without through the play store).

Even with a contract it's a nobrainer. On contract you still pay more overall.

That's the thing though, you can most likely get a far cheaper contract, buy whatever phone separate and still end up saving money overall. At least with non-iPhones, because they are available to providers at lower prices; Apple's own margins are ridiculous already, so with iPhone contracts your savings are minimal. For other phones you can easily save 250 EUR even on 2 year contracts here (let alone 1 year contracts).
And it gets even funnier if you can reclaim VAT on the phone like I can (by writing it off as a business expense); that's another 21% saved on the actual phone. Even on an iPhone 5 + 2 year contract I could save 220 EUR like that. On something like an S3 or One X I can easily save 500 EUR, if not more. Not to mention that should you need to call on warranty, it's much quicker because you don't have to go through your provider first. Business contracts are useless as well, as they typically come with more call minutes, but no unlimited SMS and less data at the same price as consumer contracts.
Maybe things are different in Canada, but here you get ripped off badly with contracts.

You are right, things are different here.
You've got to first understand that Canada is a gigantic country (area wise) with lots of area without a high population density. Dependable cell service outside of big cities (I live in the biggest, but travel for work so need it) is a monopoly because the "big 3" (who collude on pricing) control everything. The companies with cheaper contracts suck a whole ton of cock.
So basically I have 2 choices, pay full price for a phone and still pay the exact same price for a month-to-month plan (no contract) or get a phone for $500 off and still pay the same price. Seems like an easy decision.

NEW STOCK!!! I happened to be paying attention and decided to buy one today, says shipping in 1-2 weeks so hopefully it's not like the 5-6 weeks that people who bought it 3 minutes later are supposed to wait.
$359 for a 16gb comes to $423 with tax and shipping here.
