Lutzifer wrote: | well, there are no clear guidelines set for moderating apart from the forum rules and it heavily depends on different conditions like:
how much time mods have to check everything (days with many complaints and / or complex issues to be judged)
which mod is looking at it (sometimes we have different views on what is ban-worthy or only a joke)
what the report says (if somebody feels offended even by a small personal insult, he is still offended)
if it is a regular or not (meaning: a low-post member is more likely to be perm-banned than temp for bullshit)
and so on and so forth
as i stated in another thread about the moderating system and us mods: we are not perfect, but we try to make this place a better place for the community. Things violating community spirit often lead to moderation / bans.
Things that are anti-community are things that try to set people apart => personal insults, flamebaiting, racism, closed-mindedness and similar. So keep that in mind when posting.
Maybe as a take home message for all reading this:
It is a good rule of thumb to NOT throw about personal insults in high-volume, high-bullshit threads of highly anticipated games BECAUSE they grow like crazy and overwhelm the moderating staff even if all goes well. Chances are that you ll get temp banned for infractions there, even if they are minor, just because we dont have time or willingness to take even more bullshit in those...
And for the rare case that a mod is breaking rules, try to reason with us via pm. And, if that doesnt work, you can always take it up with Rinze (he is a nice guy, but be warned though: he has low patience for bullshitting, so if it results in a ban for you, its not my fault) |
Nicely written, in the style of how to lower any friction
I joke ALOT, alot of my shit as it seems to be collected as is just due to my sense of humor or such. Im pretty much a handful outside forums for people as I am very open and say it as it is, closed minded types I meet have a hard time understanding what im saying or take it as rude, because mostly they dont want to see the bigger picture.
Regarding pm with a mod, I normally would not do that, but regarding the main man not taking bullshit and no patience, well it cant be bullshit if the post shows its true and written as stated right? So I see no reason if one posted to the big man that a mod had said something offensive to someone and I did not like it then how can that be considered bullshit or to get impatient with? As said ( (if somebody feels offended even by a small personal insult, he is still offended)
I just see it as a big shame really, then as you say were all different and the slightest things upset people differently.. Me the forum could throw insults and shit at me personally all day it does not harm me annoy me I dont get worked up and rage about it, or even report it. I find it all funny in a way and just carry on. But as you say again one must take a step to try and keep an even playing field for all.
cheers for replying and you do so very promptly I must say
Thanks.

The annoying thing is that you can't even PM a mod when you're temp-banned and ask what's going on or make your case. :/

yeah, thats one of the bad sides of using bans for moderating purposes. I have seen at least one forum, where they do not ban people, but sort of move them to a "prison" part of the forum, where they sill can post, if it is only a temp ban. But that would be hard to implement here imho
if you know contact details of users here through other means (like icq or similar) you could always ask them to send a pm. I ve seen people unbanned because of interventions like that in the past. It s not happening often, but we try to make the best of a bad situation usually.

And where are the warnings? That's usually what you do as a mod unless the "crime" is too big, you post a warning, either in the thread or in a PM asking the user to remove the offending text, and if the user doesn't change it, or if the user continues, THEN a temp-ban. But noooo.. "Hmm, that looks like an insult, sort of.. fuck it: temp-ban!". That's what's annoying. Not the temp-ban itself, if I've done something wrong I'm okay with it, but it's the sudden: boom you're dead, without a warning, or a chance to make my case, that's very frustrating.

i often send pm's to people to clear up issues they might have, so i dont have to temp ban people. Others do not always go to those lengths. I m not always doing it either. Because we are all doing this in our free time. So babysitting others because of their inability to get along, can be frustrating enough to not always want to hold everybody's hands through the process.

lutzi when i see your avatar
i can only hear one thing coming out
"BLOOD AND THUNDER"
but to be on the topic who carez... i was banned and perma banned for mood reasons, pms reasons , phff reasons, the love of golf reasons , the tea driking reasons , posting what i saw in a trailer that showed a ending from a remake reason etc...
the only thing that was missing was a added line to show the TOPIC and THE POST that would justify it.... but here you don't need that if i get it right ...
hahah but to be frank , ban screen needs a added line that will show the topic WHY did you got it , a warning system with strikes would be nice also and well the internal rules set should be shown to others

Theres a far simpler reason you were banned, look at the name of the person you insulted. You shouldnt hurt the guards puppy.
