Yes it was opened so you could flash it, i understand. They can't give warranty on your machine, cause it was opened, that's right. But they MUST give you warranty on that particular "E74 error" repair job they did. See? That't the difference. They didn't do it, they basically stole your money.

You're wrong, mate, but I'm not going to argue over it. They stole my money the moment they returned the machine to me and it died again. That's all that matters, but there's nothing anyone can do about it.

When you buy goods you get the warranty, right? Services are not different at all. If they fix your car/TV/anything they must guarantee it will work for at least 6 months (can be different in different countries). If not, they must fix it for free or give your money back if they can't. I know it, also from my personal experience. My 5 years TV died not long ago. The store which fixed it gave me 6 months warranty. Same thing, my brother had RRoD on his flashed console, he had to pay so they fixed it and they gave him 6 months warranty slip. They also left 2 stickers/seals inside his console which he was not allowed to touch untill their warranty ends. It didn't help though, he RRoDed two times again, after that they apologized and returned his money.
You are probably right, you can't do anything about it now, just try and don't make same mistakes in the future. If they want your money, but can't guarantee you anything in return, fuck them. Turn around and go away, there are others who can.

I was *just* about to say; yeah, graphical artefacts like scanlines and distorted colours, especially thick green bars, are initial signs of E74 -- and as soon as you turn the machine off and back on again; E74.
Sucks mate, really sorry to hear that.

So, is it safe to send a flashed xbox to microsoft? The warranty seal looks... well, it looks 2,5 year old, but is not torn or damaged. Do they actually check it? Do they check the firmware?

It takes 5 secs to check if firmware is flashed or not, you better flash it back to the original firmware before you send your xbox to them. They wont repair it, cause flashed firmware means you opened your console

As i mention earlier in this thread my xbox gave the 3rrod, my warranty seal looked fine, there was a couple of tiny spots where the silver was missing but it would have been a tough call to say if it had been tampered with. anyway i sent it back benq still flashed with 1.6 and previously 1.4 firmware.... they sent me a replacement the same day they received it!!
If you revert back to original firmware you run the risk of damaging the seal again, so i would just send it in a keep fingers xxxxx
The new box has a paper seal so no chance of saving it.

The E74 Error happends to me from time to time aswell
some fixed i did to make it work
First of all open up the xbox and Clean all the cooling paste from the GPU and the CPU,
i used arctic cooler cooling paste on it, dont use TO much just a little bit,
then let it overheat AGAIN just like you do with the xclamp fix,
after that let it cool down and it should play again,
if you receive the e74 error again later on ( normally it works for like 2 to 3 weeks for me ) just do the towel trick,
let it overheat and ur off and running again
those are my experiences
