The concept traditionally requires a specific type of suspension of disbelief in order to be enjoyed, it's a bit of a marmite-like situation where some people find it captivating whereas for others it just doesn't work. I gave the show a try the other day and as expected I belong to the latter group.
I'm on episode 6, i really like it, one of the better shows i've seen in the last 5-6 years. There are many things i prefer in Korean movies/series over Hollywood productions.
I guess I'm the only one that really enjoyed this show.
8.5/10 as far as I'm concerned. It's more engaging and tense than some of the better known death game shows/movies like The Hunger Games which looked shiny and had some interesting moments but was ultimately very boring with silly or unengaging characters.. or other YA movies like Maze Runner etc.
Squid Game is well thought out and presented with some engaging characters and stories. IMHO of course.
I do hope there will be a second season, it all depends on WB Korea and the writer/director can get other writers and directors to work on it. He wrote and directed every single episode of this first season and apparently feel quite tired of it after having worked on it for over 2 years.
Quote:
"I don’t have well developed plans for 'Squid Game 2.' It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors," he said.
I personally thinking one of the reasons of the success of the show that it manged to bring "Asian style " TV shows to wide audience that never actually watched/familiar with that kind of shows.
I enjoy the show, but the "style" and the idea of the show isn't really something new.
nah, i think everyone secretly is just a sadist and digging the brutality gore n sadism, they just to young to have known ogrish ...
its not like the acting is world class, and the sets n colors, is just being different to be different and being all artsy like, omg waste time please thinking about why it looks different when they themselves cant even explain it
not sure why so many brings that up, something completely unique is very rare when it comes to series or movies overall, it's not really something anyone is expecting when watching something, something good is good enough to most.
i think it was very cleverly done, it has many interesting layers that is missing in similar themes i think, e.g they're not even forced to be there.
Well, What I am thinking that the show does bring is more emphasises about the symbolism/hidden messages.
Spoiler:
The VIPS are clearly analogy/symbolizm about the western crowd
For example.
Western crowd?
There is symbolism here. There is analogy here as well. There's some metaphors too. This show ain't aimed at the Western crowd. Western crowd is enjoying this show. This is essentially classism. Rich vs poor. And it is spelled out in every single episode. Greed/needs vs wants etc etc etc.
Gave it a shot cause of the lol memes being posted worldwide. Show sucks. It's live action anime (looks nice and design is nice) but acting/story is so weak and laughable. Intense moments are so cheaply done and laughable. I was expecting nail biting, edge of the seat type shit. Instead I got the boring ass DBZ story episodes. It is pretty to look at so I'll keep going on ep3 right now. But it is a chore.
Kudos to the guy trying to sell this for a decade.
I liked everything apart from those VIP people, suddenly it sounded like some B cartoon, the voice acting and dialogue was just dreadful, embarrassingly bad. Overall that part could have been done so much better, making those dudes really scary/creepy, they tried it but it didn't work because of the stupid dialogue/voices.
The ending was a little predictable perhaps (partially anyways).
It was good, but not phenomenal. My main gripe is that it is just SOOOO predictable. I don't really care about the alleged "asian overacting" or some smaller plot holes. But basically nothing surprising happens at all. You can see everything coming from a mile away.
The only really suprise was when
Spoiler:
they actually vote to leave the games for the first time. You'd think the old man (who is actually the master) would vote for the games to continue).
Apart from that, you know very well how everything is going to play out or even the general reason the games exist. Now predictability itself is nothing too bad if they get other things interesting, but they don't. Most characters are 2-dimensional and while there is symbolism and metaphors all around, it's more like "yeah greed is bad" instead of showing some interesing nuances to any of that.
Spoiler:
The super annoying "crazy-woman" had a lot of potential to be an interesting character switching around between teams, fucking the mafia-guy for a chance an so on, but basically as the show went on she just became annoying and uninspired.
Apart from that, the storyline with the cop
Spoiler:
led nowhere and didn't even cross over to the main characters again. It's completely separate and the only thing it serves is exposition to the viewer, which they could easily have handled differently. Without understanding the characters better, the moment the two brother meet is completely unemotional and so the whole arc could have been scrapped without losing anything. At the beginning I thought having the cop on the inside might make things really interesting and there were some tense scenes where he tried to fit in at the beginning, but then it fell flat. They could have just showed the "inside workings" as normal scenes without the cop.
The only explanation for him to be there at all is a setup for season 2, where he teams up with the main guy for revenge.
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”
- Albert Camus
Didn't the guy take years to write the first season all alone?
For season 2 we have months and probably a staff of writers with differing visions - no way it is going to come close to the original. Single minds still create the best stories.
Season 2 is probably easier. They've got things figured out where the first season was probably a lot of time to figure out what they wanted squid game to be. Time will tell if they'll be creative enough with the scenario though, or if it feels like a desperate attempt.
