That's why I asked for opinions, so things like this can be ironed out. As I said, this is my first ever build, so mistakes are being made.

How about this mobo instead?

dude plz, most likely kaby lake is around the corner when you actually want to order it. so its nonsense now to search for components. lets do that when its a few days prior ordering

I'm just throwing out some ideas to get a grasp on what to look out for when I get around to ordering everything (two mistakes were already pointed out, so that's a plus). Smile

I fully expect things to change on that part-list (tho I doubt I'd get anything out of Kaby Lake other than a bit of a price drop on that 6600k (but that's just the layman in me talking, as I said, I'm 99% inexperienced)).

It has begun. Amazon just dropped an ASUS 1070 for £340.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/jygPxr/asus-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-video-card-turbo-gtx1070-8g

Even if the rest of the parts will most likely get ordered around early January, I just couldn't pass up this one. Almost £50 cheaper than the next one listed on PCPP.

Sure, out of stock, but I'm not in a hurry, so as long as it's not a pricing error and I really gonna get it for this price, I'm gonna be a happy camper. I'll just put it on the shelf until then.

I would go with the 6700k,

yep. do not get an i5 at this point in time. an i7 is essential due to the amount of cpu heavy crappy ports. mafia 3 is a mess on i5. + more and more games are seeing very decent if not excellent gains with the i7. gears of lol 4, forza, games finally benefit from HT.

Eh, that's just with a stock cooler for ~400€?
At least in Germany thats just a minimal under the average price for those kind of cards.

Here in the UK, that's bang-on the MSRP. Until now they were on average £100 more expensive than the recommended retail price (FFS, this particular card goes for £473 without any discount on Amazon, the next cheapest listing on PCPP is £400).

Some people complained that it can have coil whine, but frankly, getting it for £60 less than the average £400 price for a 1070 is ok in my book, I'll just wear headpones.

As for the 6600k vs 6700k, I think I'll stick to the 6600k, I couldn't give a single shit about bad ports (if it's bad, I just don't play it), and when I ever feel like it's not enough for actually good games, I'll just get an AIO and OC it to ~4.5GHz.

thats the right punishment for your stupid decisions

ehm, coil whine can happen on any card

if you want another modell cheaper maybe check german amazon. atleast i can order without problems from amazon uk (and stuff gets delivered most of the time even from german locations. that might be cause of the still kinda high amount of british soldiers here), but i need to pay with creditcard

I see a few better ones for cheaper there, might give it a try.

All righty, the end is nigh. In two weeks, I'll send the order (I have the money, but I'm back home on holiday, so the earliest is Jan 7).

Any and all last minute constructive input are welcome.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Hmuda/saved/Vh8Jxr

If I can keep the Steam sale under £90 (and seeing just how abysmal it is, it won't be a problem), I might get a 500G SSD instead of the 250 one and drop the HDD for now. Everything else is pretty much it.

I was holding out for the 250D case until recently, but then I saw the Nano S, and fell in love. A bit taller, but also narrower. Much better cable management, no optical drive bay to get rid of, etc.

And here we go, if everything goes as planned, here's what I ordered. Wanted to get everything all together on Amazon with Prime, but it was the holidays, everyone and their grandma are building PCs, so half the components were out of stock, so half of them are coming from all around the UK. Still kept it around the target £1200 with a few timely grabs when I saw a good discount.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
So I can OC in case I need some future proofing.

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Cheaper than the Noctua one, and can BARELY fit in the case, but it will fit, and has better cooling so I can avoid an AIO as long as possible.

Motherboard: MSI Z170I GAMING PRO AC Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard
The ASUS one was out of stock everywhere, or it was £150+, and fuck that noise. This will do just fine.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Also out of stock everywhere, except on Eclipse, where it was £20 cheaper. If it was a returned/faulty kit, I can afford another one after a return, so it's no big deal.

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Will be enough until next payday, when I'll just buy a 1TB HDD for £40, but ATM it's perfect.

Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Video Card
Got this around black friday, for £40-60 cheaper. Still collecting dust, but hopefully not for long.

Case: Fractal Design Define Nano S Mini ITX Desktop Case
Ran out of stock on Amazon very quickly after xmas, now this was the cheapest I could find (there was a damaged one for £40-ish on amazon too, but no way I'd buy that).

Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
"Don't cheap out on the PSU." - Everyone ever

Monitor: LG 25UM58-P 25.0" 2560x1080 75Hz Monitor
Cheapest ultrawide monitor. Saw it on amazon for £100 right around xmas, but it was a scam. Thankfully got my money back. Meh, still worth it for some games and watching movies.

Total: £1232.23

If everything arrives safe and sound, I'll make a new thread with the build, but for now, this is it. A big 'Thank you' to everyone who helped me avoid the potential pitfalls of a first time builder.

The mem kit was £60 (was on a quick sale). Plus it's only for gaming, and very light video editing when I feel like it, so 2x8 is very much enough for years to come (I'd only get a 16GB stick if I was thinking of getting another one in the near future). Smile

Yes i would just try squeeze that extra money for 6700K, you are not going to regret it. Games are starting to be heavily multithreaded, not only those shit ports.

The 6600k is already in the mail, but for now it will be enough. The monitor is supposedly 75Hz, so I don't need super high FPS to be happy. If it's unmanagable, I'll OC, then in a couple years I'll switch to a Z270 (or whatever is good at the time). Barely any AAA games are worth my time anyway (I don't really look forward to anything in 2017 that comes to mind), the ones I know I'll play will be just fine (Elite, GTAO, Division, Paradox grand strategies, ARMA3, Warframe, etc).

The only reason why I'm building this system is because I got fed up with the technical problems with the current laptop, that are all the fault of the shitty M variant of the GPU. The 6600k is perfectly fine for my needs. Smile

Anyhow, PSU and cooler dropped today. The SSD was supposed to come today as well, but the delivery guy only had one pack. Oh well. If the tracking is correct, everything should arrive by Tuesday.

EDIT: ok, SSD arrived too. Smile

Everything arrived, put it together, and since I don't have the monitor yet (arrives tomorrow), I only did a power test, and on that front, everything seemed to be working. All fans turned, and everything that was supposed to lit up, lit up (some indicator on the GPU, power button, and a red light on the mobo). Good sign, but the real test is tomorrow.

For a first ever build, I'm glad I managed this at least.

After almost a full week of dealing with Amazon incompetence, my monitor MIGHT arrive today.

So, first time builder, complete inexperience, blah-blah. It is listed as having 2 HDMI ins. Is there a point in using both? It's supposed to be a 75Hz monitor, but I hear people only managing 60Hz. Am I right in assuming that I'd need another cable beside the included one to take full advantage of the display?

according to the people only reaching 60hz (with only full hd res) -> its cause their source doesnt support hdmi 2.0. you need that for eveything above 1080p@60hz

so if you connect an older laptop for example too which only has a hdmi 1.3 or 1.4 output you cant use the max res and refreshrate of that thing. with your 1070 you are fine, that thing has a hdmi 2.0 port
