Just because some people can work around the issues, doesn't mean they don't exist. And i'm sure some use linux purely because it is open-source and can thus be fully customized, which is obviously a nice feature.
I dont have much experience with linux, but it's been pretty bad so far. I dont know how often I somehow rendered the x.org server useless in VMs. Now of course a "seasoned linux guru" would have been able to fix that, but how am I supposed to get into this system, if it breaks hundreds of times before that?
Especially since I have to use Windows and I dont have the need for linux anyway?

There are many games that work on Linux, just not as many as on windows. I play Civ5, for example.
As for the way linux manages permissions, it really isn't very different from windows these days, only a bit safer. On windows you also have that popup asking for "root", except if you were to run a virus it probably wouldn't ask
Seriously though, if your linux needs root for "everything" or "all the time", there's something wrong with it, you probably need to put your user in the correct groups.
And if you're breaking X all the time, maybe pick a more automated distro? I doubt you have to do much editing on xorg.conf or whatever if you're running ubuntu.
But yeah, for some linux is "a truly awful OS", haters gonna hate, I'm not a salesman. Stick to your OS of choice!

My xorg was probably more prone to breakage because of virtualbox-guest stuff...

Has nothing to do with this. Parts of linux are simply truly awful. Some are fucking awesome. Same with windows.

not true at all, the problem is not with linux but with the users not understanding RTFM. all forums are full op posts made by idiots complaining about bugs when they are using test-rolling releases. they even do not understand which version of a distro they installed...
