Just got mine (yes I am late to the party). This is one sexy phone and a huge step up from my Galaxy S2.

You should be able to, but not all apps allow it. There's still loads of shit apps that want to keep their roaming data on the internal store (like Facebook).

All the really big ones will though, like games. Go to settings, apps and then sort by size. Just tap on the big ones and tap "move to SD card". The app's core files will remain on your phone, but all the extra data (game data files, caches and such) will be moved to your SD card.

Cant find that option on any of my installed games :/

Found this though but I have to root my phone first?

Poke around the Android section of the Internet and you’ll hear something similar. Users are in an uproar because they updated their phone to Android 4.4 KitKat, and now the SD card support has changed. Apps no longer work, folks have problems with cameras and music players, and while everyone else is saying “Oh, yeah. That’s how it works now,” nobody warned them in advance before they grabbed that update.

Google has modified the default permissions for the external SD Card on Android 4.4 KitKat, which directly caused many of your favorite third parity apps lose read/write access to external SD card and became useless.

Hmm :/

I'll check my dad's phone (Moto G 2014) next time I can get my hands on it, but I'm pretty sure he still has the option.

I'd check on my own, but I've got a Nexus 4 so no SD card for me (plus I'm on Lollipop) Razz

Can you make a screenshot of one of your games? Does it still show "storage used on phone" (or whatever it says in English, my phone's set to Dutch)?

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is only on Sony phones as people were blaming them but Google are the ones to blame. Or maybe it's just any phone with Android KitKat that are affected.

No, I think what you're referring to is apps that used to create random directories on your SD card and write anywhere they wanted to. That's something Google enforced in KitKat.

But this "move to SD" thing I'm talking about is about an app's OWN directory; apps can create a data directory on the internal storage and it's that directory you can move to the SD card via the settings dialog.

I'll see my dad in a bit anyway, so I'll check his phone then Razz

Edit: yep, he's got the option still. Only things that have it disabled are system apps and crap like FB :/

He hasn't got any games though, so I'll have him install some shit to see if those still work.

You need to do that anyway if you want full control and customization over your phone Wink

ability to install apps and data/cache to external sd card has nothing to do with google itself
it's manufacturer limitation, obviously so you would by bigger storage version, unless bigger is not available, then it's just a dick move, root +app2sd should fix that
most if not all chinese phones have this function build in

No. It might even restrict the use of an external sdcard for app-data further

You have to unlock the bootloader to root the Z3 and then you lose the DRM keys, permanently, they can never be restored, and also lose a lot of Sony apps/software use. There are some hacks to restore some of the camera stuff but it's not worth it imo. I'm just going to wait and see if someone creates a method to root on Lollipop. There is a $3000 reward at the moment.

lol foney always makes such a big deal out of their hw, i remember how Z1 was unhackable, well just like steam
to me personally root is a must have, i'll never buy device without root ability, it's like buying pre-build pc/laptop and unable to install any other os than the one provided
if they lock all devices like that i'll just switch to china phones they are already better quality/price/performance in comparison to over priced junk samsung, htc and others produce
don't even mention warranty, i dealt with samsung and sony's warranties which is an absolute joke

Possible root. We shall see. I think I would wait until a good amount of people confirm it works fine on the Z3 though, if it works. And that there are no hidden downsides to using it.

Did you get it?

I read that writing to SD is disabled in KK by default but some/most manufacturers enable the option.

Now that you can root (unless you are using a variant, then you might not be able to) you just need to root, use SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD, and then use FolderMount to move data to your SD card.

That's what I recently did anyway.

My wife needs a new phone, she's using my old S3 and that one seems to be on the verge of collapsing (more problems appear each month). The Z3 compact seems to be the best in its price range according to reviews. Is this a correct deduction? Would you guys recommend a different phone? My wife is a tech noob, so any brand will do. Main reqs are battery life, speed and not looking cheap (which the S3 absolutely does).

Z3 compact is quite a good midrange phone, from the more known brands i would even say the best midrange. Certainly can't go wrong, haven't read about many major issues.

Just look around these topics (usually best to do that on that forum about any phone you consider buying) http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help and see if you find any noteworthy issues with it that might sway you to buying another phone.
