Wall Street Journal reports, “The network has ordered an origin-story prequel to Dexter, a serial-killer drama that dates back to 2006. Showtime is also exploring separate spinoffs based on the back stories of compelling Dexter characters, including the Trinity Killer.”
“The origin story will be set in Dexter’s hometown of Miami, and will touch on stories of real-life serial killers of the time period,” the site’s report continues.
UPDATE: The prequel series is officially titled “Dexter: Origins.”
“Dexter: Origins” will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original show.
And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.
As for “Dexter: New Blood,” last year’s hit revival series, it had been reported last week that the series would not be returning for a second season. But it seems that report was incorrect.
The network has announced this afternoon that they’re also developing a new version of “Dexter: New Blood,” which depicts the ongoing emergence of Dexter’s son Harrison.
The drama focuses on Dexter’s son Harrison, who survived his tumultuous reintroduction with his father and flees to New York City where he must wrestle with his own violent nature and whether, like his father, he too is compelled to kill. “New Blood” will explore the kinds of themes and scenarios seen in the original series on Showtime but through a new lens.
“Dexter: New Blood” became the most-watched series in Showtime history last year, averaging over 8 million viewers weekly across platforms. It sounds like Showtime wants to use that success as the launching point for a full-on “Dexter” universe. Stay tuned for more.
The origins stuff, questionable at best. I guess different actors playing well loved cast members may stink rotten.
A second season of new blood, starring his son, I can get behind. The first season was really really good - so I am excited for this - so long as they keep the same writing and producing team.
Originally announced as “Dexter: Origins,” Showtime’s prequel series is now titled “Dexter: Original Sin,” and The Hollywood Reporter brings us the first casting news today.
Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone), and Molly Brown (Senior Year) will star in the upcoming series, which is a prequel to “Dexter.”
Patrick Gibson will be playing the young version of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan.
“Dexter: Original Sin” is set in 1991 Miami and revolves around Dexter (Gibson) as he goes from student to avenging serial killer. With guidance from his father, Harry (Slater), Dexter adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people without being discovered by law enforcement at the same time as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
“Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips will also be showrunning the prequel series.
No need for this at all. I bet there won't be any interesting story beats, the time before the series has been covered well enough in the series itself. There are no interesting gaps or whatever to fill.

Showtime has announced “Dexter: Resurrection,” a new series in the franchise which will see Michael C. Hall returning to the lead role as Dexter Morgan.
That series will be set in the present day and serves as a follow-up to 2021’s revival series “Dexter: New Blood”.
In addition, Hall will also narrate the inner voice of a young Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) for the previously announced prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” which is set in the 1990s.
The announcements were made during a panel for “Dexter” at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, with Hall himself making a surprise appearance at the confab.
Can't wait for this. Have high hopes as I loved New Blood and most of Dexter (bar the ending). I know this show gets a lot of shit (half fairly), but I for one can't bloody wait!

Watching this recent trailer I've felt a lot of familiarity with the best seasons of the original show but the one thing I'm not sure about yet is the main actor who's playing younger Dexter. Judging by this recent trailer he seems to have the mannerisms down (though a bit exaggerated in some scenes) but his looks are still uncanny valley for me, he looks like a strange combination of Will Arnett and Tom Holland with a nearly constant smirk on his face
