Counting the plethora of exclusive games that are about to hit in 2018, you need to buy a PS4, not just for this.

Import it Very Happy

I game on 60fps on PC, but on console i'm not that picky about fps, hence I bought the non-pro version and i've very happy.

it seems so linear and boring. i mean i do understand that the art, music etc is phenomenal so it's probably quite atmospheric. i never "got" that other game with the giant dog-creature either. I'd probably enjoy them more as movies.

it's amazing. You have huge world. totally empty except for nice views. you search for giants and fight. There is nothing else to it and that's the point

is there really nothing to do in the huge world, nothing to loot or run into that is interesting (apart from bosses)? Can you fall down to your death, can you swim or dive?

I don't remember there being anything to collect.
You can die by falling and so on. You can swim and dive too

It looks great. Some of the overbloomy style of original is lost but we get so much more detail in place of that. retail version is quite cheaper here so I will probably go for that

Please post a review if you do get to try it. I also never understood what was so great about this game, but I only ever watched snippets of gameplay.

The lack of physically-based renderer of this "remaster" really shows. It looks very bland and PS3-ish at higher resolution. What's worse is that the PS3 "HD" "remaster" is just the PS2 at higher resolution. So they went the extra "mile" and upgraded somewhat the world geometry, but the renderer is just incapable of bringing this wonderful world to life the best way the current technology is capable of. When will we ask more of our remasters?

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2018/01/25/things-you-may-not-know-shadow-of-the-colossus-ps4-remake/

Quote:
The colossi in the original PS2 release averaged around 20,000 triangles each, while in this remake, that number is closer to 250,000. The 16th colossus is almost 1 million triangles.

The Shrine of Worship (the main hub area) in the original PS2 release was comprised of several thousand triangles. The remake’s Shrine of Worship is composed of several million triangles. The remake’s Shrine alone has more than double the detail of the entire PS2 game world.

Every single organic, natural element in the world was manually-placed by artists to make the experience feel hand-crafted.

There are over 290,000 object instances in the game, which includes 150,000 rock instances and 11,000 tree instances.

Shadow of the Colossus Remake uses a physically based rendering system that allows the light to realitically interact with various materials. It is this rendering system that creates the dynamic lighting transitions between sandy deserts, tree filled forests, and the other environments in the game.

The colossi’s fur was engineered specifically for the remake. Each and every strand is defined by artists through a texture map that defines variables like strand stiffness, length, color, flow direction, and a number of other parameters. The GPU then dynamically renders the strands of fur onto each colossus. This means is that there is no physical geometry representing the fur. It is dynamically generated, textured, lit, and simulated by the GPU.

There are a lot of post-effects applied to the game to create the atmosphere and mood. Dynamic depth of field, motion blur, volumetric fog, light shafts, and advanced color grading were all used (and photo mode allows for you to do your own post-effects work to change the feel of a scene).

Advanced data streaming and level of detail schemes are used to make sure that the player is surrounded by the maximum amount of detail possible. System resources are being monitored regularly by the texture streamer to ensure that the highest available texture resolutions are used. Level of detail, cross fading, and view distances are all taken into account and optimized to create a high level of detail while streaming a seamless world to the player. This all culminates in a highly detailed world with long draw distances that has very few visible pop-ins of textures and objects.

Interesting. So why do the materials look so bland? Could be a material art issue. It is becoming increasingly difficult to produce game art assets

I guess it could be an artistic choice, the low color saturation certainly is, but their rock and sand materials are just ... bland and incorrect.

When the original came out on PS2 at the end of its life, it had great impact. Here, it seems, much less.

Part of it could be because they're too anal sticking too the "original design". I've seen this for many remakes (and mods). I can understand it when the original game have absolutely stellar art with tons of thought behind it. But sometimes this is not the case and it's just kind of half-assed and people have gotten used to it - "the rocks should have color X, the ground should have mainly color Y and have 1 type of grass - because the original game had these colors!", then it's not the right way to go, imo.
