|
 |
yay!!
all started with AVG fucking my laptop - office mashine can't start windows and need urgent access to my .doc files.
So, i've came across a solution that i will try: creating a linux usb bootable device and start recovering my work files.
but, after that, i still gonna need a OS on my laptop, so, i will try linux. (once again, my last attempt was like 6 years ago). This, mainly because i don't want to buy a new version of windows and i've lost my recovery cd's for my Windows Vista...
So, what distro do you guys recommend for my office computer? it's a Sony Vaio and i use it for writing .docs, reading .pdf's, working with e-mails, having a calender... both lasts, should be google friendly, as my email, contacts and calender are on gmail, with the proper company name.
any suggestions?
love!

Ubuntu,
you're better of without windows. (given that its not a gaming machine)

That's true unity is nasty, but it's not tough to ditch it.

Boo!
I really don't understand OSX as a user experience, it just seems backwards, maybe that's simply due to me having not used it a huge amount. I'd love to try it for a while but I have nothing to easily install it on.
I'd love to see a video of OSX working as a slick user interface vs newer linux desktops. I wont comment on Windows, in my eyes it is functional and that is all, I am torn as to which OS I think is more functional though (OSX vs Windows).

I'd say Kubuntu. You get ubuntu support (easy updates, large tech support forums, etc.) with a decent user interface (especially for those coming from windows).
See a few screenshots of ubuntu/elementary/kubuntu and decide for yourself, they are essentialy the same thing, only the graphic aspect changes.

You can install OS X in VMWare with ease. Just run the VMWare unlocker, then you can create a machine for OS X. The tools can be installed, and you'll have quite a smooth experience.
What's not to understand about the experience? It's so similar to Windows (desktop). It's more consistent across applications (now that most of Apple's shit faux stuff was removed, in Mavericks - OS X 10.9.X).

Using OSX within VMware wont give me the same experience as I would get using as my day to day OS. I'd need it to be the only option to force myself in to using it, within a VM I'd likely drop back to windows (and in many cases I may have too in order to access my files/services easier). I wish Apple would give in and open the OS up to the rest of us.
From my experience using OSX (which is limited, thus my question) I don't find it at all like windows in terms of ease. I find it awkward to use leading to way to much mouse usage open/close/move around apps.
I'm sure there is something I'm missing as people rave about how amazing a UI it has, I just don't see it.

I meant use VMWare to get a taste. But you can install OS X Hackintosh. Depending on your hardware, it works pretty well. But if you are not sure if you'd like it as a main OS, VMWare is a good enough option.

office for mac works there? cause i've got a copy of that... |
Yes, it works well. In fact, Office for Mac 2011 looks so much better than Office 2013 on Windows. It was designed before the metro kids came, so it looks coherent.

It's terrible?
The best Office for Linux right now is http://wps-community.org/. Until Microsoft releases their Office for Linux, but it will likely be tied to 365 services anyway.
And still there is no comparison with MS Office (Windows or Mac), it is just so much more advanced. If you want to write a small document, everything is fine, I guess, but if you need a little more serious work, MS Office is still king here.

Sorry Leo, I only sparsely used libre and open office, have never used kingsoft office. So far libre office seemed to be OK but maybe you can tell me what is so bad about it? (serious question)

Well, for starters, they have trouble opening any Office document. But let's excuse that and move on.
Spelling and advanced syntax checking in English, and for me, Hebrew
Review and tracking features are quite lacking
Text and paragraph styling options are lacking ("Oh, you want kerning? Fuck you asshole")
Charts are lacking
Table of contents management
Interoperation between the applications, meaning taking data from Excel and using it in Word
Document encryption
Embedding fonts
Excel is on a class of its own, nothing really comes close to it. There is only competition in the document and presentation worlds.
In general, every office software (other than Office) is terrible with Hebrew documents, but let's ignore that.
As a user, having to dig trough menus is a HUGE sin, it's a terrible user experience. This is at least fixed in Kingsoft and the likes of Apple iWork. But functionality-wise, there is no comparison to the heavy dog.
As a personal issue for me, the lack of any advanced typography features is very discouraging in anything Linux. Linux is stuck so far in history, it is not even funny. To support simple things as ligatures, the most I could find for DerpeOffice was run some script which goes over the document and switches characters for the unicode equivalent ligatures. So you type "ae" in your text, run a script and get "æ" instead, changing the actual text - fuck you if you want to search afterwards or do more editing
http://wps-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=97
It's in their "plans".

I would've recommended Ubuntu. Now I'm definitely going to check out Elementary OS.

I have Ubuntu 12.04.2 on my work laptop because it was the last version that my video card was supported with the Catalyst drivers. Also because I can still use GNOME and run Steam also. I agree Unity is horrible. I will have to check out Elementary.

I use debian almost exclusively on my box's at home, I would still say for a new user to use Ubuntu (or similar eg elementary, mint (debian mint is ok) because its easier to get to grips with if you dont know what you are doing, and the support community is better. The ubuntuforums piss all over the debian ones.
