Figured I'd make a new thread to try and keep things a bit cleaner. I just installed the OS and will update the thread as my usage continues. I'll keep this top post updated with changes as that will be easier but my comments will follow the thread as usual.
First things first.
1) If you are currently running Windows 8 Enterprise and decide to do an upgrade it will NOT keep any of your old applications or drivers but does not do a full format. It is indicated that this will not be the case with other versions of the OS but as with any OS install, be clear that it may destroy your current setup.
2) During the initial setup of the machine on first boot, as I was signing into an already existing M$ account it decided that now would be a great time to ask for a security code and asked what email to send it to. Not such a big deal given the number of internet connected devices I have but still a pain. This could be a crapper for anyone with only one machine as it wouldn't let me continue without entering this code.
3) The search function seems to have been improved (on initial usage). Rather than it moving me away from the start screen which I always found a tad jaring it just opens up to the right hand side of the screen producing both local and bing search results for the query typed. I'm curious to see if you can select a search engine to use other than bing, its also worth noting that these results open in the metro bing app rather than your default web browser.. which is pretty crap.
As nice as the smaller/neater search interface is, its far from perfect. It only shows 4 app results which leaves me a little screwed when trying to search for STEAM when I have 6 other apps that hit on that keyword. Hopefully this is something that can be tweaked..
The New Search
4) There is a start menu.. don't really see the point in it being there other than right clicking gets me to shut down and device manager quicker.
5) They don't add every fucking app to your start menu by default turning it into some ugly ass waste of time. Makes my life easier as I used to remove them. They have instead made getting to the "all apps" view easier for desktop users (it used to be a swipe from the bottom of the screen, not something we could actually do!!) by adding a small arrow at the bottom of the start screen that brings you to a view showing you everything thats installed. I see now obvious reason for this existing on the desktop version of the OS...
6) Booting straight into the desktop, great feature (not that it should be a feature!) but a fucking pain to actually find. http://blog.laptopmag.com/boot-to-desktop-windows-8-1-preview shows you how! Well tried Microsoft, but you have been defeated by nerds.
7) I can have more than 1 metro app open on more than one monitor! Now I know some of you guys took the piss out of this concept in the other thread but I do find it useful in a rather niche scenario.
- I have the netflix app open on my secondary 24" - This is far better than the web based app. It actually tells me what shows I'm part of the way through watching!
- I have twitter stuck to the side of my third 19" monitor with the web browser next to it. I hate every desktop twitter app, they're all far to complex but a metro based twitter app is perfect for my needs and just sits at the side of the screen giving me the info I want!
Going to go put the rest of my settings back in order and play around a bit more.

I've not tested any of those kinds of apps as I never needed them on Windows 8 but I had read that they worked, those report may very well have just been presumptions from the author though.

Same here.
I'd rather go back to Win7 than lose my very functional start menu.

I thought they said 8.1 was going to be something from the App Store so you would be able to choose if you want it or not.

That seems to be how the current non-enterprise version is installed, from what I can tell you can also roll that version back to vanilla 8 by removing the update KM.

Ok,i've got a few questions...i know i've mentioned them before and i've been a bit annoying with it but it doesn't hurts to ask...when it's about 8.1
btw,the following picture shows a spanish user with the "New Start Menu"
Spoiler: | |
-Could you upload pictures (in Spoiler tabs if possible,so it won't spam here) about how each "Sort As" option looks like in the new Start Menu?
-Can you resize all the icons so they're smaller?
-Can you do something similar to Windows 7,wich consists of having a Direct Access area with your custom programs..while below this appears the recent opened programs and games?
-You can still add the "My Documents" "My PC" and that stuff in the new Start Menu (Kinda like the image above)?
-Somebody told me that with this 8.1 you're officially? a single user,100% Admin without touching the registry (That means, for example, you can edit the Hosts file for,who knows,"pirate Photoshop",then Save, and no pop up windows for "Save As.." appears (if they did ,and you tried to overwrite the hosts file,it'd say "NOPE,NO ADMIN RIGHTS") and that you'd be able to use the Metro UI Apps (Weather is a big one for me)
(The admin thing is something important and a life savior..kind of...)
-Is 8.1 FASTER than 8?..i've heard (dunno if it's about this or not) that it has a "Kernel 6.3" wich makes it go blazingly faster..or something..than 8
-Is there a way to disable Bing search results from your searchings,so it just shows the PC results?..Also,how would those results appear like? (Showing a big/small preview icon,small/big icons, sorted by app/images/music ) (if possible, screenshots for examples would be also appreciated)
That's it for now...i'll post more doubts whenever they appear in my radar *Dinng....dinnnng...*
Thanks in Advance

Don't gather this'll be the case with the final version when it ships September/October. I've always looked at 8.1 as a larger-than-a-normal-Patch-Tuesday SP-like update thus making me think MS won't launch it when/if it breaks something. How come there're OS upgrades from 7 to 8 that don't alter anything ranging from files and drivers to settings, but this one can potentially fuck up your installation?

It seems that some users who upgraded to this "WIP 8.1" can't play certain games... Phantasy Star Online 2 (English modded),League Of Legends...i don't know about the rest of games, but i've read on google,if i remember correctly, that Borderlands 2,Battlefield 3 and some other games won't even load up
Hopefully they fix this shit and MORE in the final 8.1...else NOPE

Makes you think ... that the dev kits were available before Win8 was.
XBOne has the same kernel as Win8. There is nothing wrong with the kerenl. It is indeed much improved. The problem is the shit on top.
