I thought there would be a thread about this, but I couldn't find one...

www.raspberrypi.org

Basically it is a (nearly) complete computer for only $25 (or $35 with networking).

What do you think about this? It's primary use is supposed to teach students programming, but it apparently also works as a 1080p playback device...

I was thinking about getting one, although it will probably be hard to get one of the first devices...

There has been two threads, if memory serves, but you won't find it via search since the search is broken atm Sad. As for device itself? I'm buying one as soon as it gets released! Amazing stuff from Mr Braben <3

That's one of the beta boards, one of a batch of only TEN the were ever made and are being sold for charity. The shipping price of the final unit is $25 (equivalent UK cost would be £20). Braben posted about the beta sale;

Why are we using a licensed manufacture model?
The involvement of RS Components and Premier Farnell means that we can build volume much, much faster than would have been possible on our own. We are no longer limited to batches of only 10k Raspberry Pis; the Raspberry Pi will now be being built to match demand.

Both Premier Farnell and RS Components have worldwide distribution networks, so wherever you are in the world, you will be able to buy from a local distributor. This will saves you money on shipping; it’s a much better way for you to buy than getting them all shipped from the Foundation in the UK.

That's why. Because the Raspberry Pi foundation simply couldn't handle the volume on their own. Or at least, not comfortably for either them or the customers.

Both services don't deliver to Germany... Will have to rely on resellers, which will surely drive up the price... Sad
But I can wait. Would have loved to order one now, but it will take a bit of time anyway for decent software tailored for this to show up, so a few weeks should be alright Very Happy

It is a full computer with 256MB RAM, 700MHz Processor, an SD-Card slot and so on. Basically it has the hardware of a very basic smartphone (except for the graphics chip, which is quite good).

The interesting thing is, that you can plug in your normal mouse and keyboard, and hook this up to a nice TV. You can copy movie files onto the SD card, plug it in to your Raspberry PI and hook it up to the TV. No need to start the computer, just use the Raspberry PI to watch your movies.

And the main thing is,you get a programmable, "full" computer, for just 35$.

I wouldnt bet on much with 700mhz tho.. Surely not even 720p, so plugging in to the tv is kinda useless

but yes. That price is awesome. Kinda revolutionary

XBMC runs on that thing. They showed a clip of it playing a 1080p movie, but we will have to see if it really can hold that up in reality. But why not? This thing is mighty popular, and I expect to see software to be specifically made for this which means it will be quite optimized.

And that is exactly the point! It's something Braben and co set up to really revolutionise computing, not on a "power!" scale, but an accessible one. $35 for a full featured computer should be very enticing to computer labs in schools and universities, as well as being great intro machines for home users to practice on.
