To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a single game you can't play via softmod. Whether it's playing off HDD or, depending on how recent/new your Wii is, burned to DVD. Recent Wii's have new drives which are incapable of reading burned media, they're called the D3-2. For the most part though, I reckon you'll be loading from HDD - which is definitely the recommended method anyhow =)
Hell mate, if you don't want emulators/etc and don't mind paying a bit of money for 100% peace of mind; you could always invest in the WODE. It's an add-on device for the Wii that lets you play Wii/GC ISOs from HDD, without modding your machine in any way (though you CAN softmod to use the WodeFlow menu that lets you launch games from on the Wii, rather than the tiny screen built into the WODE) It's a tiny bit on the costly side though, being around $100 >_<

Cheers Sabin, the heads up re the new drives is a lifesaver as that was the planned route ie from disc, trying to keep the cost down so not sure about what a HDD for the Wii costs (I'll look it up) and as for the Wode, hmmm
$100 usually equates to 100UK (as always, the UK gets stuffed)
Plenty of food for thought there..
Cheers, much appreciated!

Any external USB HDD will work just fine =) I've got a 500GB LaCie Rikki, tiny little thing, that I used to use for my Wii (for use on CFG Loader and USB Loader GX) but lately the Wii hasn't even been used in god knows how long, so I just put the HDD on my PS3 instead, heh.
As for the WODE? You could order it from America and pay in USD, or from a UK vendor and pay in GBP .. should be around £69 or so. It's expensive, but if you're not comfortable dealing with softmodding - it really is the most hassle-free solution.

I thought most USB loaders now worked with ISO/NTFS? WBFS seems a bit redundant these days since you can use ISO on NTFS partitions and not have to worry about it. Scrubbing/shrinking is good, but it rarely works IMO.

I just got a quick question.
So I downloaded an ISO and converted it to *.wbfs.
It's like 400MB, which is tiny compared to the ISO. Can I just use this tiny file to load the games or do I actually need the whole ISO and this is only some sort of a forwarder to the ISO location? o.O

when using wfbs manager to copy an image to usb stick/external hdd it only copies the game files and not the dummy files

Naw, nothing has changed; Letterbomb and Hackmii will still do you just fine. Don't forget to install a decent USB loader (and DarkCorp if you intend to play burned copies) and you're good to go pretty much indefinitely. Nintendo seems to have given up trying to protect the Wii, hehe.

My recommendation is for USB Loader GX, either the stand-alone channel version or channel forwarder.

Yep ditto that recommendation. USB Loader GX is fantastic. I have the forwarder so when I turn on my Wii it automatically loads, and shows all of my fancy games as tiles!

Well, none of ths REQUIRES the net... but if memory serves me correctly, hackmii can USE the Internet to download updated WAD and setup files to make installation easier. With no net connection you'll have to download things manually beforehand. IIRC.
I don't believe you can get USB loader from within the Wii, that needs downloading manually.

Jesus I just shit my pants..
I seeing download DOP Mii, download NUS this and that..
Could some kind soul just do me one massive favour and give me a walkthrough of what I need to install after I letterbomb the wii..
Remember I will have no net connection direct to the Wii itself but one to the PC I'm on now..
I'm am simply cacking a brick that I'm going to balls this machine up..
Come on guys, old fart needs mega help please...
Just a quick put X Y Z on the SD card after I've bombed it, install x first with anything that it needs and so forth, I can't imagine i'll be able to use the built on dvd drive?
Not sure on that one..
The aim is to put a 250gig USB HD onto the wii and run games from that, fancy would be nice but basic if quicker..
