Its time to update your Winrar, Why?, because it became faster decompressing files.
Tested it myself on some release (900 meg file), and it clearly saved some time.
So, dont hesitate and grab it while its hot Laughing

From the changelog:

Version 4.00 beta 1

1. RAR decompression speed is improved. Depending on data type,
decompression can be up to 30% faster than in previous versions.

Both the general RAR algorithm and most of special RAR multimedia
methods benefit from this improvement. The only module of RAR
algorithm, which is not affected, is "Text compression" method.

Meh, it's still a beta. Hate using betas. Will continue waiting for a final release. But reading you say it's faster, surely makes me happy. Any news on the final version?

Not aware on a final release, I came by this on coincidence.
Still recommended as a beta, you would hardly notice it.

OMG! So Much Win

After all those years of using WinRAR, I have finally found a way to make it decompress the archive directly into the indicated folder, instead of always using TEMP directory.

It only took to uncheck (I'm aware it defies logic) the "Use only for removable drives" option in:

Options -> Settings -> Folders

I admit, however, the fact that the aforementioned option works in an opposite way than it should has been fooling me for all those years. Not sure if it's a bug or feature.

I usually use the 'Extract to <folder/>' context menu to prevent creating potential mess, and it was always using the TEMP folder.

Not anymore. Smile

For me WinRAR was always doing it like that:

extract to temp folder in user's directory on drive C -> move the files to the indicated folder on appropriate drive

It was very slow, and it was always doing it like that. Now, curiously enough, that has been fixed, no matter if that option is checked or unchecked. Confused

EDIT: Must have been some bug on my side. I'm glad it works as it should now anyway. Smile

Haven't posted here in a while, 5.31 is in beta now although just as with 5.30 even if it remains on beta 1 they still update it every couple of days for whatever reason.

http://rarlabs.com/rarnew.htm

(Three weeks ago roughly was the first release of 5.31 and then it was updated on the 9th January, 11th January, 12th January, 15th January, 17th January, 19th January and today the 21st January.)

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
