|
 |
Just wondering why dont devs/publishers let us do it ?
Pay for the game and download it from there servers and it would include say a PDF manual and Unique Key
HL2 is gonna do it.. so why cant other games ?
I mean take Ground Control 2 ... transport giant.. codename panzers.... all games are out in germany and not in any english speaking countrys (Due to distributors i guess) and in a way it kinda encourages piracy..
So it would be good to have a worldwide release date where u could pay the fee.. download the game and everyone can have it at the same time. And well they could charge a little less cause no boxes etc)
What do u guys think ???
Personally if they had this option i think i would buy ALOT more games...

Download online games is real, its being done just not by %100 of them,.
So if the game(s) you like arn't downloadable don't assume its just not at all happening,.
You need to do some research on it and you might be surprised how many games are downloadable, hell even Half-life2 is going to be downloadable.

It's an idea, but the fact is - with today's growing technology in games, the games are now humongous in size. Most companies cant afford to keep a server open for people to download 3gb+ games. Valve can do it for HL2 and the other cuz they're still rakin in the cash big time, but other companies? I dont think it'll become a trend..

I like haveing the disc incase I uninstall it, then I can re-install later. And yea like mentioned above, games are frigging huge these days. Plus alot of people are still useing 56k. By the time a 56ker got done downloading a 3gb+, they could have gone out, mowed some lawns for the money, went to store to buy it, play it, beat it, masterbate to some porno, and then start a different game. All before the download was done.
But I guess I do agree, its a nice offer, in case someone would prefer to download it. Like if they lived out in the middle of nowhere and didn't really live by a store that carried games.

have a wank too? on a 56k? u can only get pics or low quality samples on that stuff . d/lin games was mentioned a few yrs back for the PS3. i dont reckon the idea will work at this moment in time, however when it is available ppl will complain and will get pissed off if they lose the HD with the games on so will demand a burning device. this will just lead to easier pirating and will just be 1 big circle.

I would rather Hold an Official CD than pay the same ammount for a downloaded file
Think about it. you have to Download the File which will take a Day or 2 maybe depending on how busy the servers are and have to burn it to a CD or DVD to store it.... also what happens if the file gets deleted or corrupt when downloading... how many chances do you get to press download on the link after you have paid ????

I think the games would be cheaper if they were downloadable.
Think about it, downloading directly from the developer would eliminate a lot of useless people, import+retail+few transport companies+printing.
There aren't many people with 56k these days, and, the developers could always ship some amount of printed items to retailers.

it would be good but i think it would be unlikely that it would be any cheaper, and probably more expensive than buying it online, as most publishers would sell it at the rrp which decent gameshops would undercut alot...

Speaking of games in german...
Are german people generally bad at english since almost all games have german language support...? Even a game like Ground Control 2 (made by swedes) dont include swedish but german...?!?

I think you have a very good point Cartoon. I have thought of this as well.
Advantages:
* Faster access to new titles (Yeah, depending on connection speed, but still)
* No post/value tax (Here in Norway this is a big plus)
* Easy backup (no cd-protection, but game must have good registration methods)
* Language select (so the germans are happy)
* And finally: Good conscience for downloading
* Afterwards: Easy patching
Lots of downloaders would now actually pay for games and NForce threads would include links to pay-download. its a win-win situasion. Rips/cracks would follow shortly, but they always do..

About the cost for the bandwidth... keep in mind that a publisher who choses the route of making the title downloadable for a cost would actually save money. Printing CDs/DVDs and shipping the copies everywhere on the world cost a lot too. So not needing to do that would reduce the cost probably even more than the bandwidth for the downloadable version would cost.
Of course that would even enable PC games to be cheaper than the current ones while making the same profit.

theres not really a need for publishers if the game is downloadable.
most people hear about games from reviews anyway. when has a game poster or tv advert ever made u want to buy a game without finding out how good it is 1st? from word of mouth or reviews

As said earlier, there are already games wich can be downloaded in full version and you have to buy a key to unlock them.
If i remeber right, gimpsrus released download patches for this.
I think this kind of "business model" will be very popular in the future. Just imagine, you can buy a game for one or two weeks, play it till the end, and save some money with a limited license. Its like you rent a game at a video store, wich is possible for quite some time now.

Think of all the money publishers and developers spend on trying to make the game secure, and cd and box production, distribution, etc. Then some warez group comes along and cracks the security and releases it for everyone to download anyway. Well, I think game companies should just give up, and release their games directly to the warez groups. I mean, we download full games every day and burn them to our own CDs. It would save so much time and money, and this whole "war on piracy" would be over.
This would fix a lot of problems, because the game could come with an address to send money to, if the game is worth paying for. That way, game makers would have more of an incentive to make their games completley awesome. I mean, I ALWAYS hear about how people love the game so much they go out and buy the game, just to pay respect to the developer, right? Doesn't everybody do this? This would eliminate that extra step of going out and buying it, and it would be an end to crappy games.
Then the movie industry and the Music Industry would see how well the model works and follow suit. Instead of crappy cam recordings, you just get the actual theatre release and an address to send the money to if it was worth your time. Same with CD's. Viola! No more crappy Movies or songs.
Of course, the only flaw in my plan is human nature to be greedy.
