I'm really at a loss for words as to how this legendary title had yet to have a thread created for it in this hallowed place - thus I took it upon myself to make one out of sheer respect. Never has there been a game to rival it, and never will there be. Ah the memories.

Two interesting links -

First off - the team behind some critically acclaimed "Nameless Mod" (I have yet to play it): http://offtopicproductions.com/

And - apparently the same team is behind the HDTP (high definition texture pack), while the updates seem dead on the official site, their forum is still kicking: http://www.offtopicproductions.dreamhosters.com/hdtp/

Fallout > Deus Ex.

Now let's ruin this thread by arguing about personal preferences. Razz

DX is definitely in my all-time top 3, along with Fallout (1 & 2 together) and PS:T. I remember when I first played it - thinking it was just some FPS and then after playing a while... MIND BLOWN. All too rare a discovery when gaming.

Deus Ex is a legend. The ultimate Fpp/Tpp rpg game for me. Too bad Fallout 3 wasnt that good.

I finished DE many times and its always a pleasure. This game never gets old.

BTW. You guys are comparing Fallout 1 & 2 to Deus Ex? Those are games of totally different genres...

I can also map every single one of my 8 mouse buttons in-game flawlessly - unlike many modern games today where they won't recognize and I have to dick around with 3rd party software. This game was made when devs actually gave a shit about quality and it shows.

Awesome conspiracy-based story.
Massive world to explore.
Multiple ways to solve any given situation.
Epic music.

It truly is one of the best games ever made Smile

=Edit=

Time to reinstall! Laughing I've been looking forward to checking out The Nameless Mod, now that it has been released.

To add to what sabin mentioned:

-FPS-RPG Hybrid
-Cyberpunk setting with biotech, a very rare thing in games, let alone movies
-Complex story with conspiracies (Area 51, Majestic 12, Illuminati, Men in Black, FEMA, Vaccinations, Aliens, Bilderberg Group, Knights Templar, etc, etc) as the main line, but has underlines of many other themes/problems
-Has a couple of similar features with System Shock 2, but the similarities ends there
-Player Choices, in almost every situation you can choose what you want to do, multiple endings chosen at the end of the game
-Huge amounts of dialogue, way more than any movie, in addition lots of readable text from terminals, novels, etc, each time you play through you are bound to find new details because of the complexity
-Player Skills
-Weapon Modifications, big amount of weapons
-Inventory Management

It's highly appraised by both press and players, but I guess in the end either you like it or you don't - trying to tell people the game is "shit" just won't work though Razz

Yes, HDTP. There's also a Deus Ex for UT2k4 which can probably be combined with HDTP, but seems like it won't be released in another 5 years (only one dude working on it Laughing)

Have you tried the beta for DE-U2K4 project? It's baaaad, really bad. I think the modding world should just leave DE in the original UT99 engine, because it doesn't translate well into other engines sadly.

Still, that was an awesome summary Parallax, lol! Better than my, woefully condensed, version *grins* The game simply is one of the greatest of all time and, including this reinstall right now, I'll have finished it no less than 62 times over the years. Magnificent game and the soundtrack.. god the soundtrack!! "DuClare Chateau" will always stand out in my mind.

Check out the trailer;

It was an alpha, which has since been removed, and that is many years ago. It's called Deus Ex Reborn, and really nobody knows how it might end up. But while HDTP brings improved textures, Reborn brings technical qualities such as improved lighting, physics, AI, etc.

That is, should it ever be released (no point in waiting, it could very well be vaporware for the amount of years it has been worked on over the years, on and off), and should it actually bring an improvement.

Yeah, the author has been working on it on/off because of studies and everything else. Why he hasn't recruited more to work on it simultaneously, who knows, but its definitively the reason why it has been going so slow, and that it might not be released for 5 years. A big mistake.

In any case I think the original Deus Ex graphics are holding up well enough, even without HDTP.

True, and then.. look at The Nameless Mod. That had a whole team of developers and still took XXXX amount of years to be released, lol.

*sigh*

I just want more Deus Ex! I am NOT looking forward to DE3, most definitely not.

Didn't you hear? They are going to be streamlining Deus Ex 3.

You see, after much deliberation, it was decided that Universal Ammo just didn't go far enough. After all - you still have to keep track of how much of it you have - and who the hell has time to do that? I mean, seriously.

To cut a long story short, they've decided to integrate a revolutionary new feature called "Spasm" into the game. You simply shake your PS3 Six-Axis controller and the enemies fall down dead. It also helps you instantly select the most optimal dialogue choices.

But the XBOX360 customers have nothing to fear simply because they don't have a motion sensitive controller. No no.....fear not. Instead of "Spasm" you get "The Button". Sure its not as fun to just to push a single button, but at least you won't get carpal tunnel as fast.

Remember - its all in the name of progress and appealing to the customer base.

Deus Ex is dead - and needs to stay that way - for its own sake.

If done properly and not for the console/kiddie-generation, I wouldn't mind it (remake graphics, leave everything else). Sadly, the chance is zilch for that to happen, so might as well let it rest.

Btw, while HDTP improves object textures (and will be improving weapons/characters), [url=http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision/downloads/deus-ex-new-vision-public-beta]New Vision[url] improves world textures.
