Witnesses said one shark knocked the man off his surf board and another one bit him when he fell into the water.

"Police said one shark was reportedly five metres (16.5 foot) long and the other three metres (10 foot).
Another witness told Australia's Sky News television that two teenagers who pulled the surfer out of the water said one of the sharks was "as big as a car"."

thats why you dont go in the water in australita...6 months of the year its sharks and the other is jelly fish and also watch for the croc's...screw that!

Thats why they have protecting underwater fences on popular beaches that keeps the sharks off.

You think them sharks are big?
I remember reading a story of some men who were in lifeboats after their ship was sunk in WW2, being attacked by a giant squid that ate some of their crew, they defended themselves and according to measurments made from a piece of tentacle they brought back, the squid was estimated to be over 175ft long!
A good amount of that length would be the two grabbing arms which are incredibly long, probably over 100ft.

Yes, they serve their part in the enviroment and deserve life as much, if not more than we. Are they as destructive to the enviroment and other species as us? I don't think so.
And it's well documented they don't set out to attack but like a lot of other species are brought to it because of whatever reasons such as territorial.
I admit, my knowledge of sharks is limited
but they deserve life, even those that have taken it.

I agree with Ispep. In this age of humanity, we are destructive by nature. Sharks really aren't. We think we can go anywhere and do whatever we want, and nothing has really stopped us. These things happen, and its sad a life was lost, but its similar to saying that because some people from Saudi Arabia killed many others that everyone who is of middle east descent should be killed.

What suprises me is that he survived the attack and made it to the beach. Maybe the sharks realised their mistake and stopped attacking him.
I mean, if they had wanted to eat him there is no way he would have made it back.

I'm sure sharks have some kind of influence on other sea creatures, and what happens to the carcass when they die? Like I say, I don't know the details but I can almost guarantee they serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things.

They could possibly control populations of certain prey species. But now I don't think it would matter if they became extinct, maybe 1000 years ago when humans did not have so much control. I'm sure we could compensate.
But I think that every species has a right to life, and other organisms add so much to our world. It's more the principal then the pratical.

That won't happen, strict birth regulations will have to be brought into force, if we don't have the technology to solve it.

It's crazy though, I was watching this documentary on the AIDS epidemic in africa. All the money thats being put into trying to control it, with people being educated and birth control being given out etc.
One guy they spoke to said he regularly has sex with prostitutes without protection and doesn't care about aids. This attitude was present in the majority of the population. I can't belive a guy could only think about busting a nut when he is seriously risking his health.

my brother-in-law went there on a hunting trip, ( and no I am not in favor of those ) but said the dead were just laying on the sides of the roads.
he said that the natives thought that the black top roads gave them AIDS so they wouldn't use the roads. and sex with a virgin would cure AIDS.

yeah, ive heard of that. I read once that 4 men raped a newborn child to cure them of aids. The funny thing is after the first one defiled the poor child it wasn't a virgin anymore.
