I barely used them when they was around.
90% of the time I didn't need to even mount it. Just extract the ISO like a zip and install from it.

I remember how excited I was to get my first 4x CD rom! mid 90s? (I think).
Then got a burner and burned all sorts of dumb stuff for about 2 months (backing up things just because i could), then realized I could just do like above..and dont think I burned more than 10 discs the last 5 years I had it Razz
My last PC had a dvd burner in it. I honestly dont think it opened since I built the PC until I built a new one, other than during install to make sure power was working and the door worked.

Threw away all of the old CDs and DVDs I had as well, I don't need that shit cluttering up my apartment.

Well, I'm an old fashion dinosaur who still likes to burn games on (Verbatim) discs.

Anyone out there is doing the same thing ? Smile

Ever since you could install windows from a USB, I didn't even have a CD/DVD drive slotted in my case.

No, I was quick to ditch the floppy drive in PC, and then CD and then DVD. Once internet speeds increased, away went these. I haven't had a use for them for 10+ years. Ethernet is all you need most of the time, and what remains works with USB stick. On TV I do not use them either (never bought a bluray and DVD players have long been sold), I just download it Smile I do have a HDD recorder on TV for *some* content as a backup as some content is hard to download/stream.

There really is no need for them to exist in todays age. Multiple OS on one single USB drive, via the marvel that is Ventoy, games all downloaded, with very little boxed copies available, and even so, they would now require multiple disks with the size of most, movies all available via streaming platforms, as is music. They are also far too small for your average backup, and far to slow also.

Brings back memories though, of going to local game outlet and buying latest game, ripping disk with CloneCD/DVD etc, then returning it Twisted Evil

No need Smile

Yeah, a usb dongle for emergency windows install and internet speeds that allow me to download/stream whatever I want faster, then the time it would take me to find the disk ^^

Well, there's a cd/dvd-burner in the PC but I haven't used it, ever. My old one went bad and I got a new one from a mate of mine (when they had dropped down to $30 for a decent Samsung). I can't even remember the last time I burned a DVD. Perhaps in the Win7 days.

Technically I do have CD/DVD drives installed on all my veteran PCs, but to be honest I don't even know if they still work. They're...just there, I guess it makes me feel better to know that they're available in case I feel like listening to all the edgy mp3 collections from high school xD

I still use them for important cold backup of small amount of data, because no malware, trigger-happy antivirus or a retarded/sleepy user can modify anything on read-only media. But for anything else, they became grossly impractical long time ago.

Well mostly don't have one because I prefer the tiny ITX case convince and look, over keeping around a device out of habit/nostalgia. And it has no room for one, it barely holds a PSU, GPU and CPU cooler:

Now I DO have a portable one, somewhere...I bought about 10 years ago if I REALLY need one. But I'd have to dig and find it.

Used to burn CD/DVD as a backup for projects files. But stopped as just after 2 years some discs started to experience problems, drive needs multiple attempts to read them. Shocked And 9 / 10 disc burned 4+ years ago are completely unreadable Neutral

Yeah, that was the best. Burning all those cds and dvds and when you finally wanted to watch the movie on it, it wouldn't read it anymore...
